Private pilots have been quitely doing this for years. Check out Angel Flight and the Air Care Alliance.
Also Corporate Angel Network. Good on FedEx for helping this sick kid but understand that it happens every day all over the country with little or no fanfare.

My post office still shoves things into a box that are marked DO NOT BEND...I do not know how many decals they have ruined. I can only imagine what would happen if they were put in charge of something important like this.
