Barack Obama's deal won't be enough to stop Iran getting the atomic bomb

With less than a week to go before Iran delivers its formal answer to the West's offer of a peace deal over its nuclear programme, it is tempting to think that the diplomatic net is finally closing on Tehran. That is certainly the impression given by the suggestion that Russian President Dmitri Medvedev is prepared to support a further round of sanctions, which would most likely target Iran's oil and gas industries.

As one of the country's main trading partners, the Russians, given their geographical proximity to the Iranian border, have the ability to undermine the West's attempts to pressurise Tehran. In fact, they have done so repeatedly since the crisis over Iran's nuclear ambitions surfaced six years ago: they sold Iran sophisticated military equipment to protect it against any possible attack from the West – such as the S-300 anti-missile system – and also helped build the controversial Bushehr nuclear reactor in the Gulf.

But following Mr Medvedev's meeting with President Barack Obama at the UN General Assembly in New York, the Russian leader hinted heavily that Moscow might be prepared to drop its opposition to further measures, remarking: "Sanctions rarely lead to productive results, but in some cases sanctions are inevitable."

While this falls well short of an unequivocal commitment, it has been seized on by Mr Obama's supporters as evidence that his policy of resolving the Iranian nuclear crisis by peaceful means is paying dividends.

Either Israel will bomb them, or Iran will get nukes and be the bully of the Middle East. Enemy #1.

The Israelis have no choice. They must strike first. Time is running out.

re: Iran delivers its formal answer to the West’s offer

Doesn’t matter how they respond. The are Muslims. They have not an ounce of honor among them and they would as soon break an agreement as lop off the head of an unbeliever.

Israel will be forced to deal with them on its own, in the only way that will be effective and Iran will understand. The day after that the entire world will realize how much better it would have been to handle them on any of the dozens of occasions when they could have been controlled without having to resort to force.

If Obama believes a word of Medeved he is definately sleeping with the enemy.

The Russian’s are corrupt, greedy, and evil. Those in power are in the Russian Mafia, one of the cruelest and wealthest in the world.

The Russians pulled the wool over W’s eyes, what makes Obama think they will treat him any differently.....of I forgot about Russian reparations!

The Americans believe Mr Medvedev is more amenable to co-operating with Washington because of Mr Obama's unilateral decision last week to cancel the East European missile shield.

This is a complete straw man, supporting another complete straw man. The excuse for canceling the missile shield was that a different system would better protect Europe from Iranian nukes. Not only does this ignore the fact that Eastern Europe is afraid of Russia, not Iran, but tells us that the administration is operating on the assumption that Iran will have nukes. If Russia was not a threat to Eastern Europe then Russia wouldn't care about the missile shield. If Iran wasn't acquiring nukes then the administration wouldn't have that for an excuse to cancel the missile shield. If it were possible to smile in hell Stalin would be.

Has anybody else noted a change in Obama? He’s beginning to panic. His eyes are duller, his nasty hectoring somehow less forceful, almost pro forma. He holds his head lower, makes less eye contact. It’s all slipping away and he knows it. Iran. Afghanistan. Hamas. His Marxist agenda. His thinly disguised hatred of whites and Jews. He is on TV again right now and frankly, I can’t hear him. Just that endless, droning monotone, that nasty glance, that crappy finger he keeps waving at the camera, that endless scolding. He knows he’s in way over his head and that the psychotic left is clueness in the face of the real world. It must be terrifying for him.

He can always quit. And yes, I'll take Biden, which I consider to be an upgrade. _resident jOker is dumb and hates America. Biden is just plain dumb.

I disagree with you. To me it sounds like Obama is enjoying this limelight and is actually sounding quite like the good Rev Wright. His speech to the Congressional Black Caucus tonight made me think of Elmer Gantry........

Really? Making a deal with the Iranians won’t stop them? What sort of moron would believe that? OBAMA, of course.
