Your average reporter wouldn’t know an AK-47 from a Cadillac. They see something that doesn’t look like grandpa’s double-barrel duck gun, they call it an AK-47.

Does an assault rifle make a different sound than, say, a hunting rifle? Oh yes. It's much more menacing and scary. Assault rifles are very aggressive and randomly attack people all the time.

Early reports say a drive-bye committed the Mennonites started this whole mess. Apparently the Amish retaliated, thus causing the ongoing turf war to spill into "neutral" territory.

Firings should mean firearm was discharged. SHOOTINGS implied people targeted/hit.

Im not sure why our first reaction needs to be to get defensive about how this might affect gun rights. How but some concern for the people in harms way? The 2nd Amendment can be discussed later.
Because when the media wing of the democrat party reports it, the most frequently uttered words will be "more gun control".

Oh yes. It makes a really, really scary sound.
A hunting rifle makes a much more peaceful and civilized sound.
Hunting, assault, hunting , assault.... see the difference. One is actually very deadly to people.

Spillover from Mexico? We need more border fortifications to prevent Mexican guns from entering the country.

Not really. The AR-15 fires the .223 Remington round as well as the 5.56mm NATO ("functionally" identically other than pressure specs). The AK-47, and SKS and variants fire the Russian 7.62x39mm round.
The 7.62x39 round sounds like a Winchester .30-30 (a popular hunting cartridge), and the 5.56mm NATO rounds sounds a whole lot like the .243 Winchester round...another popular hunting cartridge.
It's fairly easy to differentiate between pistol, rifle, and shotgun cartridges...even within close proximities due to aural tonal qualities of the blast. But it can be fairly difficult to differentiate between small bore, centerfire rifles whether they be hunting rifles or semi-autos. They all pretty much sound the same, with minor exceptions. They're certainly impossible to differentiate from one another generally.
