Beijing halts knife sales, attack fears: retailers

BEIJING (AFP) – China has temporarily banned knife sales after two stabbing incidents in Beijing, major retailers said here Monday, in the latest sign of official security fears ahead of National Day on October 1.
Staff at foreign and domestic retailers including Wal-Mart and Carrefour said the ban was issued over the weekend. It comes as Beijing clamps down to prevent disruption to festivities marking communist China's 60th birthday.
Police have said a Chinese man stabbed two people to death and wounded 14 others on Thursday in the Dashilan shopping area near Tiananmen Square, where a military parade and other events are planned for October 1.

Makes as much sense as banning a 3” blade on an airplane, when the airline will GIVE you a 7” long steel knife to use to eat your meal (in business and first class).
I guess this shows that - once again - stupidity and Government are universally joined! Different country, same lunacy...
Beijing is an old city with 17 million people in it, there are probably dozens of knives scattered among the populace, God forbid if a bad man ever locates such a thing and comes to possess it.

Move 3 million people for a Dam project? No problem!
Forcibly shut down every factory, private or public within 50 Miles of Beijing for the Olympics? No problem!
Force every person entering Shanghai to have their temperature taken for fear of SARS? No problem!
Too bad you can’t stab someone with a liberal. It would be cool to see them banned...

They know good and well the futility of this but they’re just doing something for the effort. It looks good to the press PR-wise and allows the status quo to resume.

To be honest, I got that in Japan, too for H1N1... NO ONE off any plane until each and every passenger filled out a health questionnaire AND their temperature was checked.
