RAMAT GAN, Israel – Leonard Cohen wowed an adoring audience Thursday night, crooning his iconic ballads at his first show in Israel in 30 years and ignoring a political storm over his appearance.

The 75-year-old singer entertained fans at Ramat Gan stadium near Tel Aviv for more than three hours. Some in the audience wore black fedora hats, a tribute to one of Cohen's trademarks.

The concert sparked a protest long before it took place on a warm night near the Israeli seashore.

Some Palestinian activists called for a boycott because of Israel's punishing invasion of Gaza, aimed at stopping daily rocket attacks. More than 1,150 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, were killed in the three-week offensive that ended in mid-January.

Cohen responded by offering to perform in the West Bank city of Ramallah as well. He said all proceeds from the shows would go to Israeli-Palestinian peace organizations.

I’d like to know how many people have recorded Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah, dozens I’d imagine. Cohen’s version was unique, but not as good as the others that recorded it, IMO.

My favorite rendition is these Norwegian singers version:

I’ve heard Wainright and Buckley sing it. My 21 year old insists David Bazan’s (Pedro the Lion) cover is the best. I’m no K. D. Lang fan, but she does a great rendition too.

Well, yes and no. His voice, like Wayne Newton's, is pretty much gone, but he still performs nonetheless with an exceptional back-up band. It actually works well with his delivery, which is still close to poetry recital. But good stuff.

And, yes, good for him!

That’s a good description - poetry recital. I’m a fan, but in my opinion he’s one of those singers like Neil Young who really can’t sing. What an artist though!

I thought I was the only person who called it “the Shreck” song LOL.
Bon Jovi does a very decent job, but Cohen owns it.
