The M-16--especially the current M16A3--is actually in many ways a better weapon than the AK-47, mostly because of its better "out of the box" accuracy.
Interestingly, the Russians now use the smaller-round AK-74 and increasingly the AK-105 as their standard assault rifles.

Were you able to get mags with more than ten rounds for it?

I assume you are asking about the Saiga in 7.62x39. There are 30 round mags available for it, but they are more expensive than standard AK mags.
The conversion to use standard AK mags can be done by anyone with a little metal working talent. Basically, you install the 922 required USA compliance parts, then modify the mag latch and add a bullet guide.

I’ve got the 7.62x39 and I’m just running with the ten round mags. If I ever need more than that then the s has truly htf.

I own literally dozens of semi AK47 clones. In the standard 7.62x39 round they tend to be “minute of man” to 300 meters, maybe more. The 7.62x39 has almost identical ballistics to a 30-30 round and similar accuracy. The gas operated system tends to “soften” the recoil so they really don't kick much; maybe slightly more than an AR15.
Depending on the manufacturer and round the AK clones can be used to 500 to 600 meters or more. The Romanian PSL (7.62x54R) and the Yugo M76 (8mm Mauser) are used as designated marksman rifles.

My Russian friend has also told me you can't hit anything past 50 yards or so with the gun because it kicks like a mule.
My AK is plenty accurate at 100 yards and does not kick much at all. Was he talking about a 7.62 AK or a Sagia 12 gague?

Getting full capacity mags is not an issue in places that are still somewhat free unlike New York.

"Kicks like a mule"????
Absurd. It's a fairly heavy rifle, and fires a fairly mild cartridge. It's short sight radius is not conducive to accuracy ... but a well manufactured (proper tolerances on the parts, good fit-n-finish) specimen should be accurate out to a couple hundred yards.
The operator, of course, must do his part.

Huh? What is with the insults? 30 round mags are easy to get and legal in most states but not in CA, NY and a few others that I forget. What about that makes me an asshat?

I always get annoyed when Im at the shooting range and some wannabe banger shows up with one of those horrible cheap Romanian knock-off AKs. The spent cartridges blast straight out at eye level towards whoever happens to be on the shooters right.
I'm always annoyed when I'm at the shooting range and some wannabe tacti-fool swings the muzzle of his accessorized piston-less AR-15 at my head while he tries to clear his jammed weapon!
Finally, in the 21st Century, you can fix the M-16/AR-15/M-4 platform with a costly Gas-Piston up-grade.

Just what I was going to post. OT: Years ago I got into the SKS and now have several Russians with the “Izzy” being the best with great workmanship and bluing. I have three O/U made by the same company and really like them.
