Couric plans to stay put as "CBS Evening News" anchor
NY Times ^ | September 20, 2009 | BRIAN STELTER

For much of 2008, the TV cognoscenti assumed that Katie Couric would be anywhere but in the “CBS Evening News” anchor chair by now.

But despite some of the lowest ratings in the newscast’s history, she says she will remain there until her contract expires in 2011. Borrowing from Mark Twain, she said cheerfully in a recent interview, “I think reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.”

What changed? For one thing, Ms. Couric and her bosses say her departure was never actually imminent, despite reports to the contrary. They also credit her work ethic and her election coverage — including her persistent and much-praised questioning of Sarah Palin — with infusing something of a reputation turnaround.

“The program seems settled and Couric seems confident,” said Paul Janensch, professor emeritus of journalism at Quinnipiac University. “As a result, the questions have subsided, and reviews of her performance are far more positive.”

Working her way into the Guiness Book of World Records as the lowest rated evening newscaster ever.

Keep up the good work, Katie!

High dollar KC = low ratings. Just like our ‘beloved congresscritters’. Money for nothings!

Like Kennedy in the Senate, you just can’t move ‘em out.

Then again it will be nice to see her stick around for the big 500th Viewer milestone next year.

Funny how no one brings up her “brilliant” interview with Joe Biden, where he said that FDR went on TV in 1929, ya know, THAT interview, where Katie said NOTHING to him

In other words, she proved that she can carry the Dems' water with the best of them, so ratings be damned, Katie stays. I don't watch the evening network news, so I really don't care at all about her.

No wonder the evening anchors are all Obamabots. All they do is read from a teleprompter. The networks would save a lot of money if they just put the script on the TV instead of paying them all that long green.

A turnaround? From what, a biased newscaster channeling Dan Rather and other drips of yore to a robot channeling elitist 'gotcha' questions directly from Howard Dean?

She may stay in her chair until 2011, and hopefully her words will be something like "It is my great honor to anchor the final broadcast of the CBS Evening News." What a glorified cheerleader.

They would have to buy out her 15 million a year contract.
She is too expensive to get rid of.

she says she will remain there until her contract expires in 2011
And SeeBS will need her to stick around for an extra year to wield the hatchet of libel during the 2012 Presidential campaign. If memoery serves, Rather's contract wasn't up when he was taken off the air.

IOW, her loyalty in carrying the liberal water.

As in university hiring, the most important credential for a "journalist".

Yep, that’s fine. I plan on never watching C BS again for anything, not the superbowl, not MMA, not one damned thing.

I hadn’t realize how qualified she was to be a U.S. Senator or Congressman. They don’t do their job, are very unpopular and remain employed by those who hired them way beyond what is reasonable.

NBC, I can see Katie wanting to hang on, but do you folks have an institutional news death wish?

Congrats Katie. You’ve evidently be able to snow management and stall for more time.

LMAO

NBC news has already gone under with three fingers up, so idios...
