Douglas Kmiec Calls Obama's Pro-Abortion Stance: "My Catechism Come to Life"

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a new interview that is certain to upset pro-life Catholics, dissident Catholic professor Douglas Kmiec continues to claim that pro-abortion President Barack Obama takes a pro-life view.

He says he was so excited talking about abortion with Obama during the campaign that he said Obama's views made him think his candidacy was "my catechism come to life."

Kmiec, a former Pepperdine University law professor whose covering up Obama's pro-abortion views during the election drew a rebuke from Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput, receive a reward from Obama by being named as the ambassador to Malta.

In an interview with The Times of Malta, Kmiec recounts how he became an Obama supporter.

"Even though there were areas of disagreement, Mr Obama pointed out the responsibility of government to provide a family wage, to care for the environment and to provide healthcare for the uninsured," he said.

"When I thought about all these things, I thought 'this is my catechism come to life' because we are called to each of these things in the social teachings of the Church," he added.

Kmiec also told The Times of Malta of a conversation he had about abortion with Obama.

He said Obama asked him something like, "What would cause a mother to contemplate taking the life of a child? It has to be something awful. It has to be a woman without shelter, without insurance, without the next meal on the table."

Kmiec admitted that a pregnant woman's financial situation is no excuse for an abortion, but supported Obama anyway.

"I prayed on this," he said, and told the newspaper that he felt he ultimately followed Pope John Paul II's admonition that a Catholic not support a pro-abortion politician without it resulting in a move towards the pro-life perspective.

Kmiec, as he has done before, discounts Obama's clear pro-abortion record and immediate moves to expand taxpayer funding for abortions overseas, by claiming Obama is moving in a pro-life direction.

"Mr Obama has taken some steps towards this [pro-life position], perhaps not as fast as some would like," Kmiec concludes.

Kmiec also told the newspaper he has encouraged Obama to become pro-life and recalls how he told him, "How can you allow someone to terminate another person's life? What moral authority do you have for that?"

Obama replied: "Well, professor, not everyone sees life beginning in the same way. The Methodists see it differently, the Jewish faith in part sees it differently."

"If I am elected President," he told Kmiec, "I am President of all these people."

That, apparently, does not include the millions of women and unborn children who will be victimized by abortion on his watch.

I have no doubt that Malta is a wonderful place and I know that it has a very strong Catholic population, but as far as prestigious ambassadorships go it’s WAY DOWN the list.

Yes, God has a sense of humor!

In terms of ambassadorships, the prestigious ones are to major allies or friendly nations and they generally go to major backers (either financial backers or retired politicians with a lot of influence) of the president, these are to places like the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Italy and Spain. These are typically “figurehead” posts as there are long-term foreign service people in the embassies who do the real work.

Ambassadorships to places where relationships can get “dicey” (Russia, China, Mexico, South American countries) or potential “hot spots” (Eastern Europe, Greece, Turkey, South Korea, Israel and the rest of the Middle East, India) and the United Nations generally go to people with extensive foreign policy experience.

Stable countries that are American allies, but not really crucial to American foreign policy go to people like Kmiec in return for their support.

I had heard that Kmiec wanted to be appointed to a Federal Appeals Court bench but Obama wouldn’t do it.

From A Man for All Seasons...

CROMWELL. Sir Richard is appointed Attorney-General for Wales.

THOMAS MORE. For Wales? Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world . . . But for Wales!

Yes, I'm sure it was the last place he wanted to go (he may have even asked, "Where's Malta?"); that's what makes it a little funny ...

He sold his soul for fame and power. Been a story or two written about that over the years. None of them end well.

Does anyone have a good idea what happened to this man? Brain injury? Demonic possesion? Family being held hostage?

I posted the link below in the past cause it seems impossible that it comes from the same person as this obozo supporter.

Wow. Ambassador to Malta. He sold his soul for THAT. I'd laugh if it weren't so completely pathetic.

"But Richard - for WALES?"

the responsibility of government to provide a family wage

I know the ideal of Catholic social teaching is a living wage for the laborer, but how that occurs is a prudential matter, and I don't think Catholic teaching requires that the government, i.e., the taxpayers, pay every one a family wage.

He said Obama asked him something like, "What would cause a mother to contemplate taking the life of a child? It has to be something awful. It has to be a woman without shelter, without insurance, without the next meal on the table."

Maybe, but perhaps it could also be a young woman from a rich family for whom an abortion would be convenient in a society in which abortion is not discouraged in any way.

He may be the President, but he's not my President! Never has been, never will be.

Oh, PLEASE! Having government do it for you is not what Jesus had in mind, IMO. Governments should not be in the business of leading people to temptation to avoid personal responsibility.

I am reminded of the powerful scene in A Man for All Seasons, the play about the heroic Catholic English Martyr, St. Thomas More. After Richard Rich has perjured himself in order to make it possible to convict Thomas More of treason, the Judge asks Thomas More if he has any questions for the witness. Thomas More notes that Richard Rich is wearing a chain of office and asks what it signifies. He is told that Richard Rich has been appointed Attorney General for Wales. Thomas More then paraphrases the Gospel saying to Richard Rich: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul, but for Wales?”
