Herlong was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the nine succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1969). He was not a candidate for reelection in 1968 to the Ninety-first Congress. He resumed the practice of law, and served as member of the Securities and Exchange Commission 1969-1973. He died December 27, 1995.
