WASHINGTON — The top military commander in Afghanistan warns in a classified assessment of the war there that he needs additional troops within the next year or else the conflict “will likely result in failure.”
The grim assessment is contained in a 66-page report that the commander, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, submitted to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Aug. 30, and which is now under review by President Obama and his top national security advisers.
The disclosure of details in the assessment, first reported by the Washington Post and confirmed by a senior Obama administration official, coincided with new skepticism expressed by President Obama about sending any more troops into Afghanistan until he was certain that the strategy was clear. His remarks came as opposition to the 8-year-old war within his own party is growing.

Now he is rejecting the generals’ advice, as if this nothing burger has any military ability superior to the generals fighting on the ground.

Obama said in a series of television interviews broadcast Sunday that he will not allow politics to govern his decision. He left little doubt he is re-evaluating whether the renewed focus on hunting al-Qaida that he announced just months ago has become blurred and whether more forces will do any good.
“The first question is, `Are we doing the right thing?’” Obama said. “Are we pursuing the right strategy?”

The Pentagon and the White House are awaiting a separate, more detailed request for additional troops and resources. Media reports Friday and Saturday said McChrystal has finished it but was told to pocket it, partly because of the charged politics surrounding the decision. McChrystal’s senior spokesman, Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, told The Associated Press on Sunday that the report is not complete.

He said it will be "weeks and weeks" before he'll get around to this - indeed, I read elsewhere he doesn't plan on any action until March - too late.
In the meantime, his new ROE are the protecting the Taliban and getting our troops killed as the greatest rate since the war began in 2001. WHERE IS THE PRESS NOW????
