Obama: No Plans to Ask Justice to Drop CIA Interrogation Probe

WASHINGTON -- President Obama says he has no plans to ask the Justice Department to end its criminal investigation into the harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists during the Bush administration. Seven former CIA directors have asked the president to do just that. In a letter to Obama on Friday, they warned that the probe could discourage CIA officers from doing the kind of aggressive intelligence work needed to fight terrorism. Obama tells CBS' "Face the Nation" that he appreciates that the former CIA chiefs are wanting "to look after an institution that they helped to build." Obama says he wants to make sure that he's not somehow overruling the decisions of prosecutors such as Attorney General Eric Holder who are there to uphold the law.

obama must have read about “Management By Wandering Around” wihtout understanding the concept. His administration seems to stand on the sidelines and cheer whenever his people are doing something stupid or evil. - Correct. The CIA is one of the few institutions of intelligence that is capable of actually reversing the tide of communism and/or civil war. Once they are out of the picture, the other alphabet agencies are more easily controllable by the executive branch. Sure, many federal agents will turn in their badge and/or rebel before betraying their oaths and the Constitution, but Rahm will easily have them replaced. I have a friend in the ATF..the selection process is more selective than almost any other agency, and much longer. Lots of guys who care not one whiff about the bill of rights will happily join up if asked by Rahm.

The whole thing sounds like some bad tom clancy novel...namely that it could never, ever come true.

Substitute "America" for Zimbabwe

A reporter for a British-based Zimbabwean newspaper has appeared in court on charges of writing falsehoods and working without a licence, reports said on Friday.

Gift Phiri (30) had been assaulted in custody, his lawyer says.

He was arrested at his Harare home last weekend and appeared in court on Thursday facing two charges under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, said the state-controlled Herald newspaper.

The past three weeks have seen a crackdown by the police and security agents on members of the main opposition as well as civic rights activists.

Meanwhile police say they were investigating the death of a retired technician for the state-run broadcaster ZBC.

Edward Chikomba is reported to have gone missing from his Harare home on March 29. He was found dead in Darwendale, outside Harare, two days later.

In a separate development, the cash-strapped Zimbabwe government is releasing a whopping Z8,9-billion (R249-million, $35-million) to set up a new shortwave radio station it hopes will counter hostile international media, the Herald said.

Zimbabwean authorities tightly control the airwaves, and no independent radio or television stations have been allowed to operate. But several foreign radio stations are available on shortwave and private satellite, including the BBC and the Voice of America.

Jamming equipment has been used to block successfully the signal of the UK-based SW Radio Africa station, which is critical of the government. - Sapa-DPA
