I took Indian Law at ASU and one thing that surprised me was how much jurisdiction the federal government has in Indian Country--that means that the US Attorney (especially for Arizona) needs to have extensive experience in Indian Law.
That's why there was widespread excitement in the ASU Indian Law Department when President Bush appointed ASU Indian Law Center graduate Diane Humetewa as US Attorney. Not only did Diane know Indian Law, but she was Native American, and some folks felt it was a nice touch to have a highly qualified native American woman working with Arizona's 23 Indian Tribes.
Now the Obama Administration has replaced Humetewa with a 46 year old white guy who doesn't have experience with Indian Law, but is well connected in Democratic circles--former Napolitano Chief of Staff Dennis Burke.
Burke will replace Diane Humetewa, who resigned in July after failing to get an endorsement to retain her job from Arizonas House Democrats.
Humetewa, the first female Native American to be named U.S. attorney, was appointed by the Bush administration.
The move is, of course, purely political. No one is claiming that Burke is somehow more qualified than Humetewa--he's just better connected in a Democratic Administration.
But Wait a second. I thought that one of the worst failings of the evil Bush Administration was politicizing the Justice Department?
The irony is almost too rich for a blogger to take.
The Bush Administration hires a talented Native American woman based solely on her qualifications. The Obama Administration fires her and replaces her with a white guy whose main qualification is that he's good friends with Janet Napolitano, and the left side of the political spectrum that vilified Bush for politicizing Justice...acquiesces in complete silence.
Awesome.
But she was not fired. She was “encouraged to resign”
After Janet leaves AZ in a financial mess, she brings friends along to DC to enjoy the spoils.
I hadn’t heard either, but it is all too predictatable.
Wonder what kind of encouragement? a dead fish?
I hope the tribal councils of Arizona raise a hell of a stink about this. This is outrageous.
Take some scalps, guys.
(And gals)
dang, I fixed that via spell check, it didn’t take. make it Predictable.
I wonder what Arizona’s 23 tribes think of this. Or does it matter? Party solidarity trumps all.
The Rats don’t care who they hurt with their corruption. Enough Americans keep believing the Rats when they say that they are NOT corrupt — despite the incidents of Democrat corruption year after year after year.
Remember this?
Rejection of Indian casino application is questioned
Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN) Article date:July 20, 1996
The Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Committee said Friday he is looking into allegations that the Clinton administration was influenced by political considerations in rejecting an application to allow an Indian casino to open at the greyhound dog racetrack in Hudson, Wis.
Arizona Sen. John McCain said in a news release that it appears that the decision was based on which tribes made the most campaign contributions rather than on the enforcement of federal policies.
He said he has sent letters to President Clinton, Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Harold Ickes, and Interior Department Secretary Bruce Babbitt asking about their roles ...
Funny how things that are “scandals according to the MSM” in one administration are nothing when it occurs in another.
I know that the US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the Pres., it’s their call and they can be “fired” at will. The MSM didn’t see it that way when the attorney for AZ and NM (?) were let go, for cause. “It’s political” was the resounding cry.
From reading this, it appears that former President Bush made a solid appt. which would benefit the state. It would have behooved Obama to leave her there.
Where’s the resounding cry? from the MSM? Native American groups? Feminists?

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
I worked in Cal state government for 28 years. 17 in Sacramento. One thing is clear: clients, service, and the public are of secondary concern and politics is always the first consideration.
Haven’t read a thing in the “Arizona Republic” or the “Tribune”. Haven’t read in the MSM of any reaction from the tribal officials.
To practice Indian Law, it requires, I believe, at least an extra year at ASU law school.
She appeared to be an asset. But with the Obama bunch anything that benefits anyone other than his crowd, is to be dispatched.
i don’t remember that. wonder what happened to john’s letters?
Wasn’t fired. Was simply not rehired.
Not the same thing at all.
No sir,
Not the same thing at all.
Except for the person out of work, that is.
Another Clinton era scandal where no one was ever punished.
I haven’t heard from Bruce lately. Wonder what he and Hattie are up to?
That’s racist.
I had no idea that the decision hinged on the AZ Democrats?
Call me stupid, but that sounds stupid.
Not when it’s a Dem.......... /s
