Afghan-born American resident Najibullah Zazi, 24, has admitted ties to al Qaeda, according to officials investigating a home-grown terror plot against the New York subway system.

Najibullah Zazi has been under investigation for almost a year
The suspect has admitted contacts with extremists in Pakistan and may strike a plea deal over allegations that he attended a military training camp, according to US media reports of law enforcement officials. He denies involvement in any terrorist acts or plots.
A car journey last week by Zazi from Denver, where he now lives, to the Queens district of New York, his previous home, sparked a major police operation based on telephone intercepts, FBI officials have said. Searches of homes in Queens turned up maps, backpacks and other indications that there may have been a plot to carry bombs onto trains in the New York area. With President Barack Obama and other world leaders arriving in the city in the coming days for the United Nations General Assembly, security concerns are particularly high.
Despite the raids, there have been no formal arrests as a result of the investigation and Zazi is helping police voluntarily.
A US intelligence official in Washington told The Associated Press that they suspected there was an intended attack but that it was not immediately clear what the targets were. The official said that the plot was being directed from outside the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security beefed up security at airport and issued a reminder to mass transit authorities in big cities to remain vigilant.
WCBS-TV reported that law enforcement officials claim to have recorded a number of conversations between Zazi and a known al-Qaida operative in Pakistan.

The Afghan national at the center of a reputed Al Qaeda terror cell probe was trying to cut a deal Friday after two days of FBI grilling, sources told the Daily News.
Lawyers for Najibullah Zazi, 25, were negotiating with federal officials for an agreement where he could admit receiving military training - but deny plans to injure any Americans, sources familiar with the case said.
Zazi arrived at the FBI's Denver office Friday for a third day of questioning. He did a pair of eight-hour Q&A sessions with federal agents on the two previous days.
"Our strategy has not changed," his lawyer, Arthur Folsom, said before going inside Friday. "My client hasn't done anything. Our position is to answer the FBI's questions.
"They are asking him about everything -- the people he knows, people he's talked to, family members."
Two men were picked up Thursday for questioning in New York, but then released, a source involved in the probe said.
"We're still following all these guys," the source said. "And they know we're following them. The question is, 'Do we have everyone in the cell?'"

Zazi was a coffee cart vendor in Manhattan before moving to Denver, where he is an airport shuttle driver for an Airport Shuttle Service.
Wonder why the focus seems to always be on New York...for these bad guys.....when he is already buzzing around the Denver Airport....?
news just said he is still not under arrest
I volunteer to bring the board, Ernest if you bring the water.
NYC is our financial center.
It has been a target since the bomb attack on the World Trade Centers during the Clintoons reign.
Even my dogs walk way out to the back of the yard to take a crap.
Thanks E.
I can haul the water,...and the rope....
At least we are still monitoring overseas conversations...
Well, if he is cooperating with the authorities he must have learned his lesson. We just need to chalk this one up to bad judgment or “wrong place, wrong time”. I’m sure he won’t do it again. I really hope they don’t pour any water on his head. That would be just terrible.
Queens 'Qaeda' raid amid 'confession' (7 NYC bomb plot Muslims now in custody)

The FBI detained the seven confederates of Najibullah Zazi, 24 -- whose recent, pre-Sept. 11 appearance in New York sparked raids Monday at every Queens home he visited -- over the associates' alleged role in a suspected bomb plot, law-enforcement sources told The Post.
The seven Queens residents had been under 24-hour surveillance since the earlier raids, and some of them already had their homes searched, sources said. There were no criminal charges as of late last night.

Now how many do we have in Denver?
I want someone to pour water on his head....

Investigators probed a failed Queens truck rental for ties to a possible Al Qaeda bomb plot yesterday as a chief terror suspect tried making a deal to save his skin.
The New York end of the expanding federal probe centered on seven Afghan men who tried to rent the biggest truck at a Queens U-Haul on Sept. 9, sources told the Daily News.
The size of the vehicle involved - a 26-foot-long truck - suggested the conspirators wanted to pack it with explosives, sources said.
............and then a vacation in Cuba.
The truck rental bid failed when none of the men could produce a valid credit card. All refused to surrender the identification needed to pay cash, the manager of the Flushing U-Haul said.
This seems to not have been a really serious plot....or Al-Qaeda is not able to move money into the country ....
Hmm...maybe we have done some smart things...just having cash isn't enough?
Yeah, probably took their orders to kill from a dog. ;’)
