Community-organizing group Acorn said Thursday it was considering quitting its voter-registration work amid a growing political storm over its activities, a move that could hurt Democrats at the polls.
In the latest rebuke, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Thursday to block the group from receiving federal funds. Republicans attached the measure attacking Acorn to an unrelated bill that advances a top Democratic priority: making the federal government the sole provider of college loans, forcing private lenders out of the origination market.
The Acorn measure passed with strong bipartisan support, 345-75, while the student-loan bill passed by 253-171, largely along party lines.
After the vote, Republican Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia said "Acorn has violated serious federal laws" and was a "corrupt organization."
Acorn's most recent problems stem from a series of secretly recorded videos showing Acorn employees offering advice on evading taxes, setting up brothels and smuggling illegal immigrants. In the past, Acorn employees have admitted to filling out false voter-registration forms.
Earlier this week, Acorn President Bertha Lewis said the group would conduct an internal investigation into the videos, citing "indefensible action of a handful of our employees."
Acorn spokesman Kevin Whelan said the group was now deciding whether to focus on such lower-profile election activities as persuading registered voters to head to the polls. Its stated mission has been to register low-income Americans to vote.
"If you do registration on a large scale, you open yourselves up to political attack because it's inevitable that you will make some small mistakes," Mr. Whelan said.

The organization is definitely on the defensive. Pressure all states to cut off all funding to ACORN, which is a glorified criminal enterprise.

Further, when Mel Zelaya very recently made his similiar Chavez-inspired, Chavez-copied, Chavez-funded anti-constitutional, socialist, Leader-for-Life power grab in Honduras, OBAMA went ahead with it 100% to the point of pulling aid from the patriots (Michelleti) who kicked out Zelaya and who courageously prevented his return and squashed the leftist community organizing groups in Honduras.You see, clearly folks, OBAMA WANTS THIS FOR THE UNITED STATES AND FOR HIMSELF.
Obama called for a large civilian national security force, larger than our US army.
THE POLITICAL POWER CENTER OF THAT FORCE TO ACHIEVE THAT COUP D'ETAT UNDER A SHREDDED U.S. CONSTITUTION UNDER "THE MESSIAH" WAS AND IS NONEOTHER TO BE THE SHOCK TROOPS ***ACORN*** AND ***SEIU*** and others.
WE have gone in and begun to crack the testicles of this ACORN Operation and they do not like it one bit--and they are relatively silent as they were on Van Jones because they know we are on to them. It is only a matter of time before they order hits on people standing up to this impending Chavista takeover. We have to keep this up, keep this up, keep this up, tell the Republicans to lead, follow or get out of the way, and if necessary, take that imposter out of the White House on top of his furniture along with the rest of his trash (figuratively speaking).
ACORN--Along with the Tea Parties, Town Halls and D.C. March--REPRESENTED TRULY the opening shots of this long battle. AND THE WHITE HOUSE KNOWS IT.
And THIS is where the rubber meets the road. Keep it up, this has to do with the very continuation of our Republic as we know it.
Looks to me like a not too thinly disguised threat. Dems don’t find them a way out of this, they’ll lose all these ‘votes’.
Well what’s the point in their “voter registration work” if they are being watched like a hawk and can’t continue to throw elections.
