House Votes to Ban Federal Funds for Acorn

The House voted Thursday to deny federal money to the community-organizing group Acorn after a video emerged in which employees of the group gave advice to two conservative activists posing as a prostitute and a pimp who said they wanted buy a house in Baltimore and start a brothel.

Republicans added the prohibition to a Democratic bill on college lending by a bipartisan vote of 345-75, showing that Acorn, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, was increasingly seen by Democrats as a political liability.

“Acorn has violated serious federal laws, and today the House voted to ensure that taxpayer dollars would no longer be used to fund this corrupt organization,” Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 House Republican, said.

Bolstered by conservative media outlets, Republicans have been on a crusade against the organization for months, accusing it of improperly influencing elections and being protected by Democrats who were the beneficiaries of the group’s political activities. Matters came to a head in the past week after the Acorn workers were videotaped.

The Census Bureau then announced it would not use Acorn in conducting the 2010 Census, and the Senate voted on Monday to deny the group, which has received an estimated $53 million in federal aid since 1994, any housing or transportation money.

Despite that vote, Senator Michael Johanns, Republican of Nebraska, on Thursday offered the same ban to a measure covering spending by the Interior Department.

The problem, according to Senator Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat in charge of the bill, was that there is nothing in the measure that sends money to Acorn.

But Ms. Feinstein said she was willing to add his language to the measure without

Pretty good indeed. Look at the “bipartisan” results they obtained in Congress—both the House and the Senate. LOL.

Every article I’ve read from the state run media so far has left out the fact that the ACORN workers were willing to help set up CHILD prostitution (including explaining that you can claim them as dependents on your tax return) and help sneak illegal aliens into the country. They are still trying to cover for ACORN.

The ACORN defunding was an amendment attached to HR3221 that nationalizes the once free enterprise student loan sector.

Do not celebrate prematurely. “ACORN” may have been defunded, but what about BCORN and CCORN. This money will be diverted to the same people under another name. That’s the way it works.

I do not understand why we are “celebrating” unless I have this all wrong. They way I understand it, the Republicans added this ACORN cutoff to HR3221 which was the democrats bill. That bill may have passed because stupid Republicans wanted to look good to their constituents in voting down ACORN funding while they (and everyone else knows) the group will just come up with new names to get federal funds. In the meantime, they slipped in a bill HR3221 which gives the government COMPLETE control over all student loans starting in 2010. Therefore, our kids will theoretically be authorized for loans based on whether or not their parents support the Democrat party, what their own ideals are; will get loans “erased” if they “volunteer” to work for Obama and company, etc, etc.

I also understand both the house and senate bills need to be reconciled and they can drop off the defunding for acorn.

thank you for posting that info. Rush spoke of this today and warned it is another way government will control us. Why did the Repubs let this go, to look good about ACORN? Disgusting!

Too early to say that ACORN's mischief won't be "contracted out" to its subsidiaries. This could merely be a cosmetic change as far as the the 'Rats and their fraud artist minions are concerned. There are other organizations in line to replace ACORN, and, unfortunately, with the 'Rats in total control of Congress and the executive branch, this may not be as much of a victory as it seems.

Also, who knows if O might veto the ACORN defunding bill?

That’s what I’m thinking. They acted like they were voting against ACORN when in reality they were leaving our grandkids studen loans to the federal government to dole out to whom they please-or more accurately, to whom pleases the government.

But as Michelle Bachmann pointed out, the Senate and House bills will have to be reconciled before ACORN is defunded because the Senate and House bills are different types of bills.
