With 49 days to go, a new poll in Virginia finds the race for governor tighter than any poll in the last two months. Bob McDonnell (R) leads with 42% to 37% for Creigh Deeds and 20% undecided, according to Clarus Research Group, a non-partisan polling firm (Sept. 10-14, 600 RV, MoE +/- 4%).

Bob is still winning, but it's getting closer, now is the time to fight. I'd say Deeds' comments in today's debate about taxes could do him in:

BS, McDonnell will win this thing running away...I predict a 9 to 11 point spread. (Blue Dogs Mark Warner and Jim Webb not included, Virginia is currently sick of liberal national Democratic party (Tim Kaine) AND weak Republicans who have refused to get anything substantially done (Gilmore and “Macaca” Allen).

I’ll bet Deeds is kicking himself now. He had made the thesis an effective issue to weaken Bob, but now he opens this can of worms. Bob was leading handily on the issue of taxes before the debate and Deeds’ damaging comments, now he needs to ram this down the Deeds’ and the Wash Po’s throats every day until the election. Jobs and taxes, those are two issues Bob can win on.

I’m with you, I think Bob is going to do better, bit this is a natural tightening of the race as dems and Repubs coalesce around their candidates. Plus, the thesis did hurt Bob a little. But now that Deeds made these moronic comments today about tax increases the focus will shift from a stupid tw decades old thesis to Deeds’ promises to raise taxes. McDonnell was leading on the issue of taxes before this debate and these self destructing comments by Deeds, Bob should take full advantage Deeds’ missteps now:

I like McDonnell from what I’ve seen. Do you guys consider him a national prospect down the road or his he too local/evangelical?

We need to win this one first, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, no offense.

It does “seem” to be getting closer, but if you’re in the 30s at this point, I’d say you’re a goner. No way you make up 15% in a month.

Same thing is happening here in NJ. Christie had a double digit lead now it’s down to 5.

FWIW, George Allen now polls higher in Virginia than Barack Obama.

moose is right, we need to stop talking about national prospects for our candidates. If we'd concentrated on one race at a time, we'd have a Senator, or perhaps a President Allen. (don't get me started)

But FWIW, McDonnell is Catholic, not evangelical.
