East Europe grumbles about downgrade in US ties

PRAGUE (AP) Scuttling a missile defense shield in the Czech Republic and Poland helps smooth relations between the U.S. and Russia. But at what price?
Some of America's staunchest allies are the East Europeans and on Thursday, they expressed dismay at what many see as a slight after decades of their support for the U.S.
Among them were some famous names, including Lech Walesa, the former Solidarity leader and Polish ex-president. "I can see what kind of policy the Obama administration is pursuing toward this part of Europe," he said ruefully, adding: "The way we are being approached needs to change."
For most of the past decade, cozy relations with Washington were practically a given across the "new Europe." George W. Bush famously courted the region after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and leaned on it for troops to fight alongside U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer gestures during the press conference in Prague on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009. Fischer announced that the United States withdrew from the plans to build missile defence bases in the Czech Republic and Poland about which U.S. President Barack Obama informed him by phone.
a Dear Jan letter by phone? real classy...why didn’t he just IM the guy while he was at it?
Just raising America’s “stature” in the world.
Sure, he loves his Blackberry
Ok, so not only does he screw them over MASSIVELY, he does it over the phone? Why not text him for God sake?
Of all of the idiotic things this commie bastard has done, this one makes me sick in the stomach most of all. I don’t know why, but it does. I have a really really bad feeling about this.
And why are all these Europeans coming out saying it’s a good thing? I’m confused? Do they want Russia to cut off the pipeline to them? Or do they recognize that’s a threat and they are now kissing Russian butt?
They go out on a limb, and risk angering Russia to support us. When they are exposed as supporting America and can no longer back down, we walk away. They now get all the flak for supporting us, and none of the benefit. Classy of you Kenyan boy,,,
Obama cannot be trusted. This lesson will sweep the world.
I heard on the radio that Hillary tried to call the Czech Republic and Poland but they refused to take her call. Just a disaster any way you cut it.
Not only.
It’s even more interesting, if you have in mind, that he did it exactly on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion on Poland (Sept.17, 1939).
That’s the sense of time, isn’t it?
Yeah, of all the days since he took office...
I laughed at that story of some Russian woman claiming that the black communists were training someone to take over as President of the USA. Now my tinfoil ears are burning.
Sorry, Eastern Europe, but POTUS is pretty much of an asinine fascist scumbag.
What about that agreement with Israel that Bush made. Obama: “Bush isn’t President anymore”
Yeah, so no one trust America because the next guy might not like you.
America’s eastern European allies has just gotten thrown under the bus by ZERO.
Let’s not forget Taiwan.
I imagine that spoke volumes to Poland.
This is one of those days, I’m really ashamed for our country. President Reagan is turning over in his grave.

Poland should be used to it, by now.
