China says will push space programme to catch up West
Breitbart ^ | Sep 17 2009

China said Thursday its rapidly growing space programme was the crowning achievement of the nation's high-tech transformation and pledged to continue to develop it to close the gap with Western countries. "I believe a space programme represents a country's high technology and I believe China has already become a major country in high technology," Vice Minister of Science and Technology Li Xueyong told reporters.

"Our success shows not only the progress of the space programme but also our overall level of science and technology," he said at a press briefing.

Li said China will invest 35 billion dollars in high-tech development this year, despite a budget squeeze due to an economic slowdown and massive government spending aimed at stimulating the economy.

The nations that lead on the frontiers dictate the course of human history.

The Chi-Coms know this and that is why they are willing to spend money on it.

The real trick is finding somebody dumb enough to go up in a Chinese made rocket.

I don’t think they should be underestimated.

The way things are stagnating on our end, “catching up” with us shouldn’t be too difficult.

“I don’t think they should be underestimated.”

Absolutley not.

It is serious business and this nation had better get it’s long term space goals dialed in.

China will take the lead if we do not.

The know what leading on the frontiers means.

Exactly.

If Obama does not restore funding he cut to NASA to do it’s job.

China will most certainly will exploit that. We will pay dearly in the future.

Last time I check, we’ve lost two Space Shuttles, like we have any room to gloat.

All they have to do is wait and we’ll catch up with them on the way down.

This isn't that bold a statement considering that we won't be flying after the shuttle gets retired next year. Of course there is the ares I rocket that NASA spent billions of dollars designing only to find out that it doesn't have enough thrust to lift the Orion space ship they spent billions of dollars designing. Even after they cut out most of the crew safety features. Oh and even if it could lift it the thing shakes so badly that the crew will be turned into jelly. Then there is the Ares V heavy lift rocket, that they have spent billions of dollars on and which they haven't even decided on engines for yet.

Unless the ChiComs are talking about advances in Power Point technology they shouldn't have too much trouble catching up. It isn't too hard to catch up when the competition's rockets are rooted to the ground like oak trees.

Ummm, make that three times. Shenzhou 5, 6, & 7. Each on was like our mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. 1, 2, & 3 person crews respectively.

Restore the funding that was cut is all that truly is needed.

But only if the Obama administration and Congress restore some $3 billion in lost funding and maintain politically stable, long-term support.
Yeah, like that's gonna happen in this administration.

For the cost of a cash for clunkers program [annually], we could reach for the stars. No, they'd rather shred serviceable vehicles and keep their union buddies paid off. It doesn't dawn on them that every $ spent on space is spent here on erf and is far more stimulating to the economy.

When the Chicoms get to the Moon, I expect them to stick their flag in the ground and claim the whole thing.

IIRC, the Chinese sent a huge fleet to East Africa with 26,000 sailors and soldiers in the 15th century. The mandarins decided to burn the fleet and stop exploration/colonization when the fleet returned to China. I think today’s Chicoms see that as a grave error which they will not make again.

But the MSM was too busy reporting Rush Limbaugh’s prescription drug problem that week to report on the first Taikonaut.

When you give up on space, you give up on the advances in technology that got you there. Others will reap those benefits. You’ll see a flash.
