At least six Italian soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack on a military convoy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, Italian defence officials say.
Reports said two Italian military vehicles were hit by the bomb. At least 38 others were injured in the attack, the Afghan health ministry said.
The bomb went off near Kabul's diplomatic quarter in the city centre.
The blast comes as Afghan President Hamid Karzai reaffirmed his belief in last month's election process.
August's presidential election has been overshadowed by widespread allegations of fraud. ... Correspondents said then that the attack underscored the increasingly brazen nature of the Taliban threat.

You have to admire the strategic thinking of the Pakistanis, uh, I mean the Talibs.
They are going for ISAF’s Achilles Heel, the NATO troops.
Public opinion in these European democracies is against any of their troops in Afghania, hence the Talibs targeting NATO troops, causing an interalliance split between the US and the rest, putting pressure on the US to go it alone, with public opinion here having turned against the war.
Dang, Mullah Omar has read Sun Tzu, or at least the Pakistani Generals tasked with commanding their proxy troops.
BTW, The Anointed One's Team is weakening the Rules of Engagement. Wrong message to the Worthy Oriental Gentlemen who oppose Truth, Justice, and the NATO-American way!
The: bomb that killed six Italian soldiers here on Thursday prompted Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy to declare that his nation had begun planning to bring our young men home as soon as possible.
Well, knowing Berlusconi, one has to parse "As soon as possible." But, if the order to withdraw were accompanied by an invitation for a weekend at his villa, there would be immediate mass desertions!
My niece, who served in Afghanistan said, ".... the place may have been a mess, but the Italians had the best mess."
Blessing on these Italians that offered to serve.
The Italians should create some sort of “Fabrizio Quattorocchi
Medal” for Italians that exhibit devotion to duty (e.g., cleaning
up countries that need help)...or the “Medaglia d’Oro al Valor Civile”

a ping for you...if you are still hanging out here...
Sucks to be correct sometimes.
Gotta hand it to the Talibs, this was a “smart” bombing and ambush, no doubt.
Italians are bugging out.
How long before the Germans.
How long before the Americans.
After McChrystal’s upcoming grilling by the pompous, arrogant blowhards that are out elected “representatives”, I’ll bet he’s wishing he could be waterboarded instead.
And the purpose of the roasting will be to set the stage for a US withdrawal, contrary to whatever Obama has said or what the military wants to achieve even some success there.
Bye, Bye Silvio and take your pasta with ya.
Good! If that happens, it will be excellent news. Trying to build a "democracy" in that benighted land is a pipe dream. We can't afford to keep paying for Obama's wars. We are bankrupt.
LOL! I'm sure they did!
>.We can’t afford to keep paying for Obama’s wars
Absurd formulation.
Bush went into Afghanistan, remember.
But I have no problem with an American Bugout and Retreat.
Let the Talibs crow and the Pakistanis cheer.
We’ll end up back there anyway.
