Army 1st Lt. David Timothy Wright II, 26, died Monday.
Details of his death were not available from the Department of Defense.
His parents, Tim and Michele Wright, issued a statement through Primrose Funeral Service.
"We want to say how much we appreciate the prayers and support that has been shown to our family during this very difficult time. David was a true soldier, who cherished the opportunity to fight for his country.
"We arrived at Dover Air Force Base this evening, where we are awaiting the arrival of Davids remains later tonight. David was a very special person and cared for so many. We loved him greatly and will miss him tremendously.
David Wrights father is a Moore police officer, his mother a hair stylist, said Tom Noles, his former coach at Moore High School.
Wright attended OU on a track scholarship. He joined the military after graduation, Noles said.
"David was a wonderful young man. Very respectful, very dedicated to what he was doing. Very polite. His parents did a great job of raising him, Noles said.
Noles is a neighbor of the Wrights, and David Wright was one of the first friends his son Tommy made when they moved to Moore, he said.
"They were very proud of him and what he accomplished, and he accomplished a lot, he said.
Moore Public Schools Superintendent Debbie Arato said the school was informed of his death on Tuesday.
"He was very well-liked, Arato said.
Services are tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Journey Church of Norman, his parents said.
Killed were:
1st Lt. David T. Wright II, 26, of Moore, Okla.; and Sgt. Andrew H. McConnell, 24, of Carlisle, Pa.

Report: Rules of engagement led to soldiers deaths
0 needs to fix the ROE he's foisted onto our brave soldiers and help them win this war.
Sending in more soldiers, as is being called for by members of the Senate, without fixing the ROE will only result in more US casualties, imo.
My son deploys in November. 1LT David Wright was the second close friend of his who has been killed.
I thought LTC (R) Ralph Peters made an excellent point this morning on FOX News. He said we should go back to our 2001 strategy which was to go there and just kill the terrorist. Our current strategy of winning the people by feeding/educating/caring the Afghan villages will not work because the people do not care about their own country.
Rest in peace you brave hero and may god bless you and your family.
LTC (R) Ralph Peters made the same point last week or this past weekend.
Find them, kill them and leave them and where their bodies are.
He might consider asking his superiors if there is protection for soldiers like him against international criminal courts if 0 is found to be ineligible, just to cover his 6 before heading out.
As for dialing back our strategy to 2001 standards, we have professors filling the halls of our administration, all from liberal universities, and with no real-world experience, thanks to 0. I'm not optimistic.
While I thank your son for his willingness to serve, I urge him and others to keep themselves safe - even from our own administration.
You know it just occurred to me. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony that after telling us US conservatives for years that Zero was eligible to be Pres_ent only to have International Marxists prosecute our soldiers at the Hague fo taking "unlaful orders to murder innocent civilians from an illegitimate usurper." It would really be just too much.
That would be a spectacle. I wonder if our main stream media would even be aware of it, though.
Please express our condolences to your son, and ask him to please pass them on.
My friends and I do rallies twice a week in support of the troops. We have done so since the beginning of the war and will not cease. We will never forget.
God bless!
Heartfelt condolences and prayers for the family and friends of 1st. Lt. Wright, and Sgt. McConnell.
God bless and be with your son. Our deepest appreciation and prayers for all who serve, and for their families.
God bless your son for his service. Please pass on our condolences.
LTC is right. Just kill the terrorists.
Rest In Peace, David Wright, and know our prayers are with your loved ones.
