Marist Poll: Paterson Hovers At 20 Percent, Lazio Lacks Support
NY Daily News ^ | September 16, 2009 | Elizabeth Benjamin

A new Marist poll does not bring good news for Gov. David Paterson, who can't seem to get his approval rating to budge, no matter how hard he tries.

Just one-fifth of the electorate thinks the governor is doing a good job, while 34 percent rate his performance as "poor." Paterson was at 21 percent in a June Marist poll and 19 percent one month prior to that.

He continues to score poorly with voters across the board - even members of his own party. Only 24 percent of fellow Democrats say he's doing well as governor.

As for 2010, 70 percent of voters polled said Paterson isn't a viable candidate. That includes 65 percent of Democrats, 80 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of independents.

Sixty-seven think AG Andrew Cuomo should run (that includes 53 percent of Republicans, 77 percent of Democrats and 66 percent of independents). If a Democratic gubernatorial primary were to take place today, Cuomo would trounce Paterson: 70-23.

Cuomo's approval rating has been holding steady at 69 percent. (It was 67 percent in June and 70 percent in May).

On the GOP side, 58 percent of voters want former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to run for governor, while 55 percent said they don't think Rick Lazio, who is poised to formally announce his candidacy next week, should get into the race.

Republicans really want Giuliani to run (81 percent), but are evenly divided on Lazio (43-43). A Giuliani vs. Lazio primary is 83-13 at the moment.

Paterson's numbers are incredibly low - wish they had polled the Hillary factor because I think there may be some truth into the rumor that she is going to quit her cabinet job and throw her hat into the ring.

I’m not so sure of that. He’s not competent and he’s pro gay marriage.

Cuomo will run and get the Dem. nod. Rudy will be toast if he takes on Cuomo. Rudy would win the Senate seat against Gillibrand. Don’t be surprised if Hilly quits Sec’y of State and gets into a primary with Gilly. A Rudy- Hilly race would be very close.

Uh, no. Hillary is a very popular figure in New York, while Rudy is seen as a has-been by all except some deluded folks with vowels at the end of their names who live on Staten Island.

Is Rudy going to run for Governor in 2010 or try again for President? Earlier this year, I thought there was a deal between Rudy and Lazio. Both men agreed not to run against each other in a primary. Lazio has announced for Governor. With Lazio running, it will emboldened Patterson to stay in the race. in fact, it may give Spitzer ideas of a comeback and perhaps, challenge Patterson in the primary.

It’s just that we don’t have much of a farm team.

Lazio is best remembered, if at all, for losing to Hillary. The little guy never even had a chance.

The last thing Obama wants is for Hillary to leave the administration because she can not be controlled if she does. Look for the White House to push their own candidate which will not be Hillary.
