Northwest salmon recovery plan may include breaching dams

In a case closely followed by environmental and business interests, a rewritten plan for restoring endangered and threatened wild salmon runs on the Columbia and Snake rivers in Washington state and Idaho includes studying the possibility of breaching four major hydroelectric dams if other steps don't reverse the decline.

The revised Northwest plan, known as a biological opinion, was submitted Tuesday by the Obama administration to U.S. District Judge James Redden in Portland, Ore., who had been critical of a previous plan submitted by the Bush administration that rejected even a study of breaching the four dams on the lower Snake River.

The Obama proposal leaves much of Bush's plan intact. But it now includes an "aggressive" implementation section: A precipitous decline in the Snake River runs would trigger the dam breaching study. Congress would have to authorize any actual breaching.

"This is considered a contingency of last resort and would be recommended to Congress only when the best scientific information available indicates dam breaching would be effective and is necessary to avoid jeopardizing the continued existence of the affected Snake River species," the administration said.

I don’t think people are going to sit by and let the dams be breached. Not for a fish. Let the fish adapt. We are all part of nature and it’s not our fault we’re smarter than they are. We don’t play life with one hand tied behind our back.

That’s why we have fish ladders. Make them better. That’s all there is to it.

Breaching every dam is the goal of the ecofreaks today...tomorrow it will be dismantling windfarms because of the perceived genocide of a stupid carrion beetle or some such garbage...in short, their goal is the destruction of US society and it's rebirth as communities of archaic food gathers living in harmony with their environment...caves and cattails and nuts and berries with generous amounts of cannabis.

Control both the salmon and sea lions before you blame the Dams.

Quite possibly. To do so would require that at least 95% of Americans disappear, as the land cannot support more than that as hunter-gatherers.

So what do they plan to do with the other 285M Americans?

Pol Pot only wanted to force society back to a subsistence agriculture level.

They sat back and allowed water to be turned off to the California Central Valley — food breadbasket of the country — for a 2 inch smelt. They have been fighting for years to take out the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado, even though we would not have survived the drought here in the west without that dam and resultant lake.
