Down at the Chinese outlet store in Albany known as Wal-Mart, Chinese tires have so successfully undercut U.S.-made tires that the Cooper Tire factory in that south Georgia town had to shut down.
Twenty-one hundred Georgians lost their jobs.
The tale of Cooper Tire and what it portends is told in last week's Washington Post by Peter Whoriskey.
How could tires made on the other side of the world, then shipped to Albany, be sold for less than tires made in Albany?

Don’t buy the crap. Just last week I went looking for juicers— every one in stores was a cheap plastic Chinese product. Went online and found a stainless steel one made in the USA, it can be done

There are some things that even a thrifty person like myself will not skimp on.
Buying TIRES made by people whose food industry kills our pets and their own children?
I may be cheap but I'm not crazy.
They probably vulcanize them from recycled condoms.

Let us do unto our trading partners as they have done unto us. Protectionist!
Cooper Tire has seen the light and is now opening and acquiring plants in China, and sending Albany workers over to train the Chinese who took their jobs.
See! Innovation and adaptation! American capitalism at work.
"Free tradin'" away America's technology and capital.. it's the New World American way.

China leaves out the gum strip, leading to tread separation. The tires blow out, the tread can come loose and wrap around the axle, potentially killing you. There have been recalls, hundreds of thousands.

I buy tires for their quality. I wouldn’t trust my wife’s, daugher’s, or my own life to any tire made in China. I usually stick with Good Year or BF Goodrich.

Most of the Chinese products I have bought have been sub-par. I would not trust my life to Chinese tires.

Probably had no effect. Unless you actually believe that assembly line workers at the tire plant were previously earning LESS than 7.25 an hour.
And lets say minimum was not increased, how much do Chinese workers make an hour? A dollar an hour is the standard in Mexico, i doubt China is much different.

We haven’t free traded away anything. If anything has driven the jobs away, it’s taxation and regulation - what Walter Williams calls “predatory government.”

this confirms that Patrick has gone rould the bend, and found Obama there.

Where they have tilted the playing field against us, let us tilt it back again. Transnational companies are as amoral as sharks. What is needed is simply to cut their profits from moving factories and jobs abroad and increase their profits for bringing them back to the U.S.A More Protectionist and seditious drivel!!!
Bringing Jobs back to the U.S.A. that is sooo un-patriotic!!(sarcastic post)

Union thugs are losing their jobs because they bankrupt the companies they work for because they want to make 40.00 an hour and retire like a king on a fat pension and have premier health insurance with a 40 hour week and 8 weeks of paid vacation. Who can afford to hire them so it's off to another country to hire.
The rest of us work 50 plus hours , get a weeks vacation and pay through the nose for health coverage. Not to mention , we are on our own for pension.

Cheap slave labor, it’s what they want for us too

RE: "If anything has driven the jobs away, its taxation and regulation - what Walter Williams calls 'predatory government.'"
That explains out sourcing (made abroad, imported and sold here) but what explains in sourcing?
To wit, how do foreigners moving here and hiring Americans to make things to sell to Americans handle the 'predatory government?'
