(Glenn) Beck and the Mainstream
Washington Post ^ | 9/14/09 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 09/15/2009 4:11:10 AM PDT by nickcarraway

It has become a familiar chain reaction: Talk-show hosts whip up a noisy controversy, which hits higher decibels as it spreads to the establishment media, which costs some unfortunate soul his job.

But now the middleman -- the journalistic gatekeepers of yore -- may no longer be necessary.

By the time White House environmental adviser Van Jones resigned over Labor Day weekend, the New York Times had not run a single story. Neither had USA Today, which also didn't cover the resignation. The Washington Post had done one piece, on the day before he quit. The Los Angeles Times had carried a short article the previous week questioning Glenn Beck's assault on the White House aide. There had been nothing on the network newscasts.

"Where is the press on this?" Beck asked in late August during one of several rants against Jones. But it turned out the Fox News host didn't need the big news organizations to claim his scalp.

Beck's rhetoric may have been over the top as he denounced Jones as a "black nationalist" and "avowed communist" (Jones embraced communism in the 1990s but said he later changed his views). Yet Beck also trumpeted information that forced Jones to issue two public apologies within days. The first was for calling Republicans "a--holes" in a February speech, video of which was posted online by Beck backers. The second, more serious offense was that he had signed a 2004 petition charging "that people within the current administration may indeed have allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext to war." Jones said he didn't agree with that view, but his signature was on the "truther" document.

From the piece “ ... Although he began firing at his target earlier, Beck intensified his assault after a group co-founded by Jones, Color of Change, launched a boycott campaign that has led dozens of advertisers to withdraw from his television show — a detail that Beck neglected to tell viewers. “

Gee, I kinda thought Beck was up front about this. Certainly everyone on FReerepublic (and other new media) was aware of it.

Howie, put down the paper and get the real news when you need it!

Bernie Goldberg is right.

Who cares? Nobody is watching the MSM anyway.

They're lamenting their demise.

All the liberal media had to do was grow some curiousity! They purposefully let themselves become irrelevant, and will ultimately be replace by those who *DO* have curiosity.

So Jones is an 'unfortunate soul'? LOL

Now with the Acorn and SEIU thieves being next, wonder what lapdog Howie will call them?

Bernie also said that we should stop calling them the “mainstream” media because they are no longer anywhere close to mainstream.

Truthfully we should call them the “partisan press.”

That's it Howard... use the technique...

LOL. Beck spoke of it but isn't making himself the central issue. If Kurtz likes that sort of "journalism" he should watch Olberman who spends all of his time preoccupied with bashing FNC.

Beck keeps emphasizing the point that the vast corruption should anger every tax payer, regardless of party affiliation.

Moments ago, he said today's video will be released this afternoon during his tv broadcast. The West Coast this time, and more devastating than the others.

Kurtz, your industry is no longer “mainstream” and hasn’t been so for a number of years.

THIS, Free Republic, Glenn Beck, Fox News — we are the MAINSTREAM. It was all MAINSTREAM Americans — 2.5 million — that showed up in your city three days ago. You saw us. We didn’t see you.

Kurtz, even calling you the “Legacy Media” seems less than appropriate. Perhaps “Archaic Media”, or “Old Fogey Media”, or “Backwards Media” work better.

My local newspaper, The Express-Times, called me last night and asked me to subscribe. I told them I would NEVER AGAIN SUBSCRIBE after the way they’ve been treating Glenn Beck.

I like 'past tense media'.

I’d hardly call Van Jones an “unfortunate soul”. This guy has labored to create his communist-gangsta persona all his life. It took Glenn Beck to make his past finally bite him in the a$$.

I've been racking my brain to try to come up with a more descriptive moniker for the MSM. How about OPO - Obama Propaganda Outlets?

yes, paulycy, that is true. Only if “mainstream” is just a label for a predefined set of sources does the op-ed make sense. However, if mainstream means the main stream of news, then Beck IS mainstream. It is not that the mechanism described now bypasses the mainstream; rather, the mainstream has changed, unbeknownst to hasbeens like the NY Times.

Glenn just told the Friends that the official count of the march on D.C. is 1.7 million...the Friends were surprised admitting they had been reporting tens of thousands.
