Reform Opposition Is High but Easing
Washington Post ^ | September 14, 2009 | Jon Cohen and Dan Balz

President Obama continues to face significant public resistance to his drive to initiate far-reaching changes to the country's health-care system, with widespread skepticism about central tenets of his plan, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

But after a summer of angry debate and protests, opposition to the effort has eased somewhat, and there appears to be potential for further softening among critics if Congress abandons the idea of a government-sponsored health insurance option, a proposal that has become a flash point in the debate. The gap in passion, which had shown greater intensity among opponents of the plan, has also begun to close, with supporters increasingly energized and more now seeing reform as possible without people being forced to give up their current coverage.

Obama continued his stepped-up effort to sell his health-care plan, appearing Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes." He said that he wants a package that would deliver effective change and noted that he will bear the consequences of any public backlash against the result. "I'm the one who's going to be held responsible," he said. "I have every incentive to get this right."

Earlier, Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), who has been seeking a bipartisan compromise,

They've got the actual poll buried in another link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postpoll_091309.html?sid=ST2009091400007

It shows 48% approval and 48% disapproval. Yet they're still saying 77% approval on liberal websites and other MSM.

Unless it sticks around in a couple of weeks, it’s nothing but noise from the speech and will decline. WAPO knows this but the whole point of the speech was to be able to give this headline to convince Democrat’s to walk the plank. Though I’m pretty certain they were hoping for a bigger post speech bump than they got.

The telephone survey was conducted Thursday through Saturday among a random national sample of 1,007 adults.

Not much of a survey if it included "adults," not "likely voters" or even "registered voters." And the Compost of course doesn't say the number of Republicans vs. Dems vs. independents. I think the Compost is - gasp! - making it all up.

My God - they are STILL running the McDonnell thesis story after 10 days and recent polls show that the DEM has not dented his lead ...

48 % are for a bill that has not been written and no one has read. I would love to see the survey . Are they asking about a gov program or a generic , do you think there should be ins reform. I don’t buy it ..

"..and there appears to be potential for further softening among critics if Congress abandons the idea of a government-sponsored health insurance option,.."

If people are stupid enough to believe that the plan is NOT a back door to a public option there will be softening and then only if they forget about the FINES if you don't get health insurance.

The WAPO is "whistling past the graveyard". This thing is opposed by 49% of the American people. And, I'd say that many of those "in favor" of it, will change their minds when properly informed.

Dick Morris said tonight that if this passes, there will be a shortage of 30,000 doctors overnight. And, in 15 years, there will be a shortage of 125,000 doctors.
If the Dems push this thing through we could have a Revolution on our hands.

“opposition to the effort has eased somewhat”?
Yeah it shows what with that little d.C. protest of Ozero’s policies.
Eased somewhat?
How about this “magic negro” has awakened a sleeping giant and he and his liberal Democrat henchmen and f-ing RINO turds are going to go down hard.
And the Washington Post is trash. If they treated this poser marxist punk like they did Nixon He’d be in jail like he deserves.

This little story line can shove it. Hussein’s takeover of the healthcare system is dangerous and a threat to liberty.

We will continue to resist the communist.
