Former Carter press secretary Jody Powell dies
WASHINGTON Jody Powell, who was White House press secretary and among the closest and most trusted advisers to President Jimmy Carter, died Monday of a heart attack.
Powell, a member of the so-called Georgia Mafia that descended on Washington after Carter was elected president, died at his home near Cambridge on Maryland's eastern shore, said Jack Nelson, a retired reporter and close friend of Powell. He was 65.
Nelson said Powell had been working with firewood with a helper who briefly stepped away. Powell was discovered a short time later on the ground. He said Powell had had a previous heart attack in recent years.
Powell, who first worked in Carter's gubernatorial campaign in Georgia, joined Carter's presidential campaign in 1976 and served as chief White House spokesman between 1977 and 1981.
After leaving the White House, Powell became one of the founders of the Powell Tate public relations firm in Washington.

Prayers for his family.
One of the most even-handed of all in the Carter disaster.
Concur. Prayers for his loved ones.
My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
He was arrogant but nothing like Axelrod and Emmanuel
Another name from the past, gone too soon. RIP.
Con men usually do. He was expelled from the Air Force Academy in his senior year for cheating.
Oh my bad- Not Jody Powell but it was Hamilton “Jurdan” who spit on the babe in the bar- Hamilton also dead, at age 63 last year
Hated the Carter years, but always kinda liked Powell. RIP.
never knew that but it seems perfectly appropriate
did they give him a bust of Ted Kennedy instead of a diploma?
