Mayor's Glenn Beck Tribute Rankles Democrats

Bud Norris didn't realize what a firestorm he had created.

The Mount Vernon, Wash. mayor decreed that Sept. 26 would be known as Glenn Beck Day. He also scheduled a ceremony to give Beck a key to the city that the Fox cable host was born in.

"I don't know if I expected the magnitude of resistance," Norris told CNN. But he also indicated that he has received "a tremendous amount of positive response."

Norris has known Beck since Beck’s parents owned a bakery in Mount Vernon. The city official feels as though Beck's success story should inspire all Mount Vernon residents regardless of their politics.

Evidently, some Dems disagree. Democrat groups have led protests in the city over the Beck salute.

DailyKos launched an effort to prevent this weeks ago. But the website DefendGlenn.com called in its users to call and email/snail mail the mayor with support. John Hill of DefendGlenn says his folks sent 4,800 emails to him, and the mayor emailed Hill to thank him for the tremendous response (and told him the Kos people sent only 1,200 or so).

We can overwhelm the other side EASILY. We are new to organizing--especially because conservatives actually work for a living. But the internet and sites like DefendGlenn.com and the rightie blogs can really close the gap. The Left has had the advantage in tech, but we are waking up and I predict we will overwhelm them in the future.

If Hitler was coming to visit, cameras from both local and out-of-state TV stations would be all over it -- as they were when four people protested the initial announcement. None have committed to the ceremony itself.
