Everyone agrees: the mainstream media is biased, inaccurate

The newspaper industry has done a lot of griping about the loss of their business model, but perhaps that has more to do with the loss of their credibility than with new technology. The latest survey on news media from Pew Research shows that Americans have the lowest opinion of the mainstream media in the entire time that Pew has polled on the subject. And now Democrats are almost as likely as Republicans to complain about bias in news reporting:

The public’s assessment of the accuracy of news stories is now at its lowest level in more than two decades of Pew Research surveys, and Americans’ views of media bias and independence now match previous lows.

Just 29% of Americans say that news organizations generally get the facts straight, while 63% say that news stories are often inaccurate. In the initial survey in this series about the news media’s performance in 1985, 55% said news stories were accurate while 34% said they were inaccurate. That percentage had fallen sharply by the late 1990s and has remained low over the last decade.

Similarly, only about a quarter (26%) now say that news organizations are careful that their reporting is not politically biased, compared with 60% who say news organizations are politically biased. And the percentages saying that news organizations are independent of powerful people and organizations (20%) or are willing to admit their mistakes (21%) now also match all-time lows.

Great cartoon. Ultimately, the press is interested in creating public opinion which perpetuates its ability to earn profit. They curry favor with and serve as mouth pieces for the parties in power (as if stating Dems’ and Pubs’ views cover the whole possible range of opinion).

Rush has a great idea: The next protest locations: the media outlet (NBC,ABC,CBS, New York Times, etc) offices in New York City. Demand that they start printing TRUTH! Let’s Roll! IT’S TIME TO HOLD THE MEDIA ACCOUNTABLE !! Count me in!

Forget the press. They will never come around to the truth. Neither will the crazies on the liberal blogs. Never! Conservatives must continue to set up their own venues for the truth, and do so as real, for profit businesses. Rush is so powerful because he has a business plan and it works.

Very clever business model. And it's working so well for their bottom line (not to mention their top line).

How can you come to that conclusion after watching their treatment of GW Bush for the past 8 years? Or GHW Bush, who they hammered with the "Read My Lips" mantra?

Look at all the broken campaign promises less than one year into The One's term - think they will take any of them and promote his retirement like they did then?

Rush is brilliant. I caught only a minute of his show this AM (sometimes its all you need), and he was talking about how the left pundits are calling Limbaugh “Boss Rush” because he’s the only one on the right demonstrating vocal, focused leadership on any of this.

He’s got a point. I see precious few, beside the SINGLE example of Joe Wilson, who has just called all of this for what it is - a great big lie.

I thought they pretty much threw W nothing but softballs for about five years, then once it was clear the other pocket was ready to take over, the tide turned.

They characterized him as a dunce from the beginning. Al Gore was smarter, remember?

The Rather-gate fake guard happened in the first for years as well (reelection).

I my opinion, they gave him a pass for a year or so because of 9/11...that's all.

Ultimately, the press is interested in creating public opinion which perpetuates its ability to earn profit.

Nonsense. There is no "the press." There are only multiple factions within it, with disparate agendas. The ownership might want to see profits, but they are generally far from the day-to-day editorial decisions that shape bias in the news. It's obvious from decades of watching this that the reporters and editors will happily run the newspapers into the ground, giving themselves the opportunity to shape the news according to their own personal politics until they have lost the shareholders' entire investment. They care nothing for profits.

At some newspapers like the NY Times, even the owners are doing it, destroying their own wealth while cheering the editorial staff on as they act as propagandists for liberal politics.

Like Congressional districts, most corporations have gotten too damned big. The supposed reins in the hands of the shareholders/voters are so diluted by size that oversight and governance has disappeared, replaced by a self-perpetuating and out of control cadre of 'professional' politicians and managers.
