House lawmakers are poised to introduce legislation that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
The law, which was signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996, defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and prevents same-sex married couples from receiving the same federal benefits as heterosexual married couples.
Reps. Jerold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) -- who is the first openly gay member elected to the House -- plan to introduce a bill this week that would scrap DOMA. Baldwin is also gay.
In the 13 years since the bill was signed into law, four states Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Vermont have recognized same-sex marriages. In 2010, New Hampshire will likewise change its marriage laws to recognize same-sex marriage.
President Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign promised a full repeal of the DOMA.
In June, Obama announced a package of domestic partnership benefits for federal workers. However, the president did not extend full health benefits to same-sex couples, drawing strong criticism from gay leaders.
Defending his position of extending only certain benefits to same-sex couples, Obama said, Unfortunately, my administration is not authorized by existing federal law to provide same-sex couples with the full range of benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples.
Obama added, Thats why I stand by my long-standing commitment to work with Congress to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act Its discriminatory, it interferes with states rights, and its time we overturned it.
The three House lawmakers are scheduled to unveil their bill at a press conference on Tuesday.
Thank you for these links as well.
fantastic claims? attended a public hearing at the Judiciary committee at the state capitol on “transgender issues”. Just quote the agenda from the groups ... are they lying about their agenda?
Yep I think Obama got about 80% of the vote in San Francisco. He’s hoping to get to 90% next election. You have to work hard for every vote. (sarcasm)
Had I known Grace, the woman who received the vile phone calls from the homo-nazi intimidator, I would have hunted him down and broken every freakin’ bone in his face until he was begging for his life. He thinks he’s been harassed and beaten up in the past - he would not have believed the beating he would have received from me.
The adoption of state marriage-protection amendments will be a moot point for states if the repeal of DOMA does go through - I can hardly see how such amendments could be a safeguard.
I mourn the fact that we've lost any real chance to pass a Federal Marriage Amendment - the window of opportunity was open a crack several years ago, but the vile moderates, libertarians, and head-in-the-sand, let's-be-nice Republicans thought it was overkill and mean, saying that an amendment could be passed if the dire need arose. Well, the logical conclusion of our apathy and downright stupidity is upon us. Do we think that after state enforced sodomy recognition-as-marriage is forced on us all that the momentum will EVER be regained to pass such an amendment? And that during the lengthy process required to do so, untold injury and outright rape to every decent societal value will not be brought upon Americans in every quarter of society with a raging vengeance by the homo-fascists?
Read the links posted by MassMike and weep. This will be America from shore to shore if the tide is not held at bay and pushed back by some miraculous means.
If a state marriage amendment is in place, the only way for a gay marriages from another state to be recognized in such state is if the judiciary rules that the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution mandates that marriages from other states be recognized. The Supreme Court has historically allowed for a “policy exception” to the Full Faith and Credit Clause, and I seriously doubt that there will be 5 SCOTUS votes for the proposition that gay marriages from Massachusetts must be recognized in Idaho.
I always wondered why when the Republicans had control, they didn’t repeal any of the Democrats legislation initiatives. Was there an unwritten rule or maybe a Gentleman’s agreement in force that prevented it?
Several great documentaries exposing this homosexualization of children have been made, but before being aired, well-funded homo-activist groups get wind of it and barrage media station management with threats and rabid outrage. Nearly every time, the television stations relent and pull the airing of the program.
The DOMA was intended to work hand in hand with state marriage amendments and laws, giving them strength and ultimate validity. Each part of the DOMA exists for a reason - to honor each state's sovereignty regarding moral values.
Given that I think it’s 13 states that have laws in place already... laws that MassResistance claims will result in children being dragged out of churches to be mutilated... I think someone would have noticed by now.
Yes, their claims *are* fantastic. I also think that the do the conservative cause much harm by making them. For that matter, I think the Homosexual Agenda’s greatest ally is the Westboro Baptist Church, for the same reason.
Fortunately for us, the other side has “Code Pink” and their ilk. Our greatest allies. Anyone even half sane will look at them, and realise that anything they’re against must have a lot going for it.
you may be right. Thanks for caring.
Yep, I bet there are plenty of rats groaning and rolling their eyes over this stroke of genius.
