President Obama will declare tomorrow that his economic policies saved America from a second Great Depression, but his words of reassurance risk being drowned out after a tumultuous 48 hours of protests and debate over his spending plans.
Mr Obama will speak on Wall Street a year after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, an event that unleashed a global financial meltown and the worst economic crisis since the Depression.
In his speech, a week before he hosts the Group of 20 financial summit in Pittsburgh, Mr Obama will argue that February’s $787 billion (£472 billion) stimulus plan staved off economic catastrophe. He will call for action on the financial, regulatory and structural problems that triggered the crisis and that still dog what is a slow recovery.
Yet his remarks come as the debate over his $1 trillion plan to reform the US health industry spilled at the weekend into broader concerns that public spending may be out of control.
Tens of thousands of protesters converged on Washington DC, the largest anti-Obama rally since he took office.
The size of the protest took authorities in Washington by surprise, as demonstrators from across America descended on the capital to express not only opposition to the health reform plan, but broader anger with the expansion of government.
The greatest source of concern, and the issue looming largest over Mr Obama’s presidency, is the exploding federal deficit, at a time when he is proposing hugely ambitious and costly spending programmes – with health insurance reform at the heart of them.
Many protesters carried signs highly demeaning to a sitting president, as the organisers sought to invoke the spirit of anti-British fervour – exemplified by the Boston Tea Party –

What policies would those be? And how did they "save America" from a depression? Is loosing 500,000-over 600,000 jobs a MONTH since he took office "saving America? How does that work exactly?
His intransigence and the resulting government gridlock (he’s even estranged his own Blue Dogs) probably ARE largely responsible for our economic woes not being even worse than they are.

Our “N” (Narcissist) in chief is doing more than simple lying. The sooner that people realize that FUBO means to bring an end to the American way of life ... and at the same time end the lives (albeit in-directly) of those people who helped build it in the early and mid 1900’s the quicker we can remove him ... mark my words ... he will not go peacefully. I really love how the phrase “You Lie!” has become so prevalent in the last few days. It’s like a new battle-cry or rallying-cry. It seems like the phrase has taken on an even greater, more significant meaning now, although I’m not sure what it is.
Obama was really rocked when these words were shouted to him. I could clearly see the anger, frustration, and annoyance in his face. He didn’t like it one bit. It is my opinion that this phrase should be used as often as possible when dealing with our federal government now, heck, I wish I had a T-shirt with “You Lie!” on it with proceeds going to congressman Wilson’s re-election.
Just wanna take a moment to thank congressman Wilson for saying this historic phrase at this historic time. These words will be remembered for some time I think. Congressman Joe Wilson is a hero and a patriot. He had the mettle, the BALLS, to poke the devil in his eye! He told Barack Obama what we all think, what we all know to be truth! God Bless Joe Wilson and the citizens of America!
