Huge crowd, yes. But not two million. Even DeMint has now changed his first boast on this. Malkin is wrong because the police do not give estimates.
We were there and have seen a lot of crowds on the mall for inaugurations, July 4th festivities, marches, etc. Two million would not fit on the Mall in its two mile stretch.
Best estimate from experience? - 200,000 plus. For those familiar with the Capital and the Mall, the crowd filled the Capital west lawn, the area around the Grant reflecting pool, and west to Fourth street. It started encroaching on another group’s permit west of the Grant statue. It could be another 100,000 to 200,000 because they were forced to spread out along the sides of the rally because of the permit limits and the loudspeakers’ range.
It was a very large crowd, far beyond expectations, but too many groups inflate the numbers (mostly libs). It was NOT “tens of thousands” as the CNN NBC crowd are trying to say, but more like hundreds of thousands. BTW, the DC or Park Police do NOT make estimates, so anyone saying so is wrong.
Not bad for a rally organized by amateurs with no coordinating megalith like unions or the NAACP. Just real people. Almost ALL of the thousands of signs were handmade, not the fancy pre-printed ones handed out by liberal groups like MoveOn and SEIU.
I posted this on earlier threads. Now reports coming out are backing up my estimate. 200,000 (up to 400,000 because many were off to the side in the nether reaches of the Capitol lawn) is a HUGE number - four full Yankee Stadiums. Let’s not get carried away with the 2 million claim and give the left an opportunity to refute everything else.
And it was true grass roots. Almost ALL the signs were handmade, not the product of SEIU and DNC printing presses that characterize liberal rallies.

The President , and his Party Enforcers , will NOT be aware of the range and scope of his Opposition, UNTIL he is made to resign. A big collective NO! as an act of resistance , is the next step.
A MILLION OR TWO people is hard to ignore, and the Dem Power Elite, with Zero at the top, will only be doing themselves a disservice by pretending, as their spinmeister/strategists were this morning, that it’s entirely normal , and this protest is basically no different from Code Pink’s presence at Anti-Bush/Iraq war rallies. Their tune will have to change a little when the actual numbers are figured out, and then submitted to the
“Dem Strategists” over the next several days. I can’t wait to hear how Bad Bobby Gibbs handles this, but I think there is bound to be official word from the WH itself that will be designed STRICTLY TO ASSUAGE WHAT IS GOING TO BE A GROUNDSWELL THAT IS GOING TO GO ON IN A HUNDRED DIFFERENT WAYS ALL FALL AND WINTER IF NECESSARY. The absolute first order of business, though, should be a concerted effort to make them pay attention by making every effort to replace THEIR majority with OURS in 2010. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE

A friend who is in DC and has lived there for all his 60 some years of life was there and he said it is the single largest demonstration he’s ever seen. Yeah, he was around for the civil rights, anti-war stuff since Vietnam, the million man crap. All of it. This one he was, of course, personally invested in, but he said it was a glorious thing to behold. I want ObaMao to have “stuff” running down his leg. Yeah, bring on your ACORN and SEIU goons and let’s rock ‘n’ roll.

Later in the day, around 2, the street was empty on that CAM. They must have been at the mall.
I just got back. It was GREAT!!!! People were backed up down the mall. They said we didn’t have a permit and everyone started shouting, “WE OWN THE MALL”!! They backed down especially when they tried (but couldn’t) clear the roads.
I don’t think anyone in their wildest dreams expected this. The news media here was saying 10’s of thousands but everyone knew that was bogus. Someone said Chris Matthews reported 60,000 and we all laughed. Politicians are making a BIG mistake. This is a growing movement.
BTW-They did everything they could to make our lives difficult including fencing off areas and closing train stations. We still had a great time.

NPR is giving us good coverage as far as transmitting the message honestly, but they are saying “tens of thousands” are there. Yeah, right!
