Rep. Charles B. Rangel, New York Democrat and chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, is becoming a metaphor for almost all the sins of our age.
Let us count the ways.
How about corruption? Currently, Mr. Rangel is under investigation by two House subcommittees for illegally holding four rent-stabilized apartments in New York and not disclosing more than $75,000 in income from a rental villa he owns. He also took free Caribbean trips paid for by corporate cronies and used his congressional letterhead to press for money for the City College of New York's new educational center, which bears his name.
Mr. Rangel also acknowledged that he improperly listed his assets, as required by law, and failed to report additional checking accounts valued between $250,000 and $500,000 -- princely sums acquired on a congressional salary.
Try also hypocrisy. Mr. Rangel is the head of the Ways and Means Committee that writes the nation's income tax policy. The politician, who for generations has urged higher taxes, has chronically schemed to avoid paying them. Don't dare try that if you are a waitress or schoolteacher.
In this regard, Mr. Rangel is similar to other Obama cabinet nominees and secretaries like Tom Daschle and Timothy F. Geithner -- advocates of higher taxes and bigger government -- who themselves were in violation of the federal tax code. In this weird, new moral landscape, good public intentions apparently offset private lapses.
After the Republican scandals involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Rep. Duke Cunningham of California, Rep. Mark A. Foley of Florida and Sen. Larry E. Craig of Idaho, new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised to "drain the swamp," to end the Republican "culture of corruption" and to create "the most ethical Congress ever." Proclaiming ethical reform apparently means you have already enacted it.

Must be real nice to have that kind of money in a checking acct.
Yep, Charlie uses a checking account and Willie Jeff uses his freezer.
Obviously, they behave that way because the rules don’t apply to them. They are our Overlords. They make laws that we have to observe, but they don’t. Imagine if this crook was an ordinary citizen, not an Overlord. He would have been indicted, tried and convicted by now. Yet he is still writing tax law for the rest of us to obey.
Politburo is alive and well in the US of USSR...
African leadership, huh?
I think that aspect of the matter has always been the case... not new. The new part is that they get away with it, and in fact, get a promotion.
It seems that old Charlie is ALSO exempt from the REST of the rules he and his cronies have imposed on us.
He is speaking about himself I presume.
Charley Rangle= Adam Clayton Powell. What is it with Harlem Congresscritters?
I’ve been thinking about a life of high crimes and misdemeanors- Perhaps I’ll run for governor or senator so I can commit crimes with impunity-
Agreed, they now blatantly say they’ve done nothing wrong or it was an oversight and others like Pelosi support them. It’s a sadder state of affairs.
That is because they see to it that the rules don't apply to them.
.
INTREP
If you haven’t noticed, the rules don’t apply to them. As long as there is a “D” after their name.
Now that they are allowed to hold positions of authority perhaps Rangel, The Divine One, Holder, Acorn etc. et. al. are exhibiting their ideas of governance. Perhaps the Anglo American had better get used to this. Plenty of examples abound, Rhodesia, South Africa, Detroit, Baltimore. But no! That cannot be, I am wrong, I know that love and tolerance shall wipe away all memory of such excesses by the new conquerors.
“....and failed to report additional checking accounts valued between $250,000 and $500,000”
That kind of chump change is easy to lose track of.
Heck, I don’t report the loose change I find in my couch.
These bastards are not our “Rulers” but are merely our representatives unless we allow them to overstep their elected office.
White crackers should quit picking on this black icon.
Is Michael Jackson still dead?
Is the innocent man, OJ Simpson, still in prison?
Why can’t Whitie just learn that it’s their turn to be slaves?
