There is speculation about the future of the Republican congressman who called US President Barack Obama a liar during last night's address to a joint sitting of the Congress.
South Carolina congressman Joe Wilson called out "you lie" during Mr Obama's speech on health care.
Mr Wilson later apologised and Mr Obama accepted the apology.
Some from the southern states say Mr Wilson will be re-elected in a landslide when mid-term elections are held in 2010.
But his likely Democrat opponent is reported to have raised $60,000 as a result of Mr Wilson's outburst.
Mr Wilson is generally considered a mild-mannered man and many in his home state were surprised by his comments.
But he has become a hero to the right wing and his office in Washington has been mobbed by conservatives.
"He was speaking for the American people right now, right then, at that point in time. He was saying what you were thinking, was he not?" asked radio host Laura Ingraham, whose remarks were echoed on many other conservative radio programs.
But to the left, Mr Wilson is now a man who now must be beaten in the mid-term elections.
Democrat Party consultant Patrick Murphy saw Mr Wilson's interjection and the raucous behaviour by Republicans during Mr Obama's address as part of a concerted effort to undermine the President.
"There's no sense of decency left with these guys and they're just hitting the lowest possible rung in the ladder to try and upset healthcare and try and undo this presidency," he said.
Wilson apologises
For his part, Mr Wilson today did not look or sound like a hero - instead he seemed like a man who had started more than he planned.
He revealed he had only said sorry after the Republican Party leadership told him to do so.
"I last night heard from the leadership that they wanted me to contact the White House and state that my statements were inappropriate; I did," he said.
"I'm very grateful that the White House; in talking with them, they indicated that they appreciated the call and that we needed to have a civil discussion about the healthcare issues and I strongly agree with that."
Democrats say Mr Wilson's apology was not genuine because it was only made under instruction.
Democrat House member James Clyburn says Mr Wilson must be made to formally apologise to the House and he plans to bring it to the floor of the House for a vote.
"You cannot stop people from applying their own limited intelligence to words, and that's what we have here," he said.
"There's a decorum of the House and I would have hoped when I spoke with him today that he would follow my advice and go to the House and apologise to his colleagues for violating the decorum.
"But he refused to do that and now he's saying today that the only reason he called the White House is because his leadership ordered him to do so.
"So he has no remorse whatsoever so his words have very little meaning."

It was an outburst, but it’s not “heckling”! That implies intent to disturb the speaker, whereas this was a spontaneous reaction.
Works for me. He should have told Boehner to go to hell.
Did anyone see that guy giving Obama a Hitler salute last night? I think it was Rush (may have been someone else) said Dems sat on Repub side and it was one of them. They are soooo unscrupulous. I am beginning to think ACORN got corrupted from Dems in Congress.

My family will be donating and so should every conservative Freeper out there regardless of what state they reside in!
I don't think Wilson's apologies will hurt him at all, this isn't a Macaca moment and judging by conservative support and raising three-quarters of a million dollars in 2 days is impressive. He'll easily win his seat and Dems are wasting their money targeting him when other Dems in toss-up races could use the money.
