France will next year become the largest economy to levy a carbon tax, but will introduce it at a low starting rate to try to pre-empt a backlash from an already heavily taxed public.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, who will unveil details of the tax on Thursday, hopes the move will underscore France’s environmental credentials ahead of December’s Copenhagen conference intended to draw up an international agreement for emissions reductions after 2012.

Of course, France has lots of nuclear energy plants and are building even more. It would be great for them if other countries were hobbled by carbon taxes.

Well, this should help their economy. I thought that Sarkozy was the voice of “conservatism” in the new France....but everything is relative I guess. Socialists never met a tax they did not like....

If your going to levy any kind of fee on Carbon, a direct Tax is the best and most honest way to go.

Cap and Trade is nothing more then a scheme to skim money off of politically unfriendly industries while enriching the connected and special interests who will either be the middle men or exempted industries.

You could say it’s the smartest of two stupid options.

Stripped of all the BS, the "carbon tax" is simply another tax invented to be levied on a helpless already overtaxed public.

period.

Next discussion, please?
