On Sept. 11, 1297, in a rare but important military victory for Scotland, clans under William Wallace defeated a large English force at the Battle of Stirling Bridge northeast of Glasgow.

In 1777 American forces under Gen. George Washington were defeated by the British in the Battle of Brandywine near Wilmington, Del.

In 1841 all but one member of President John Tyler's Cabinet resigned to protest Tyler's veto of a banking bill. (Only Secretary of State Daniel Webster remained.)

In 1918 the Cubs lost the World Series to the Boston Red Sox.

In 1962 the Beatles recorded their first single ("Love Me Do" and "P.S., I Love You") at Abbey Road Studios in London.

In 1985 Pete Rose got his 4,192nd hit, breaking Ty Cobb's 57-year-old career record, in a game in which Rose's Cincinnati Reds defeated the San Diego Padres 2-0 in Cincinnati.

In 2001, in the deadliest ever attack on the United States, nearly 3,000 people were killed when terrorists hijacked four jetliners, crashing two into the 110-story twin towers of New York's World Trade Center. The two others crashed into the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field, killing 233 people, including the hijackers (189 in the Pentagon attack and 44 in Pennsylvania).

In 2002 football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas died; he was 69.

In 2005 Japanese voters handed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's ruling coalition a landslide victory in elections for the lower house of parliament.

In 2007 China signed an agreement to prohibit the use of lead paint on toys exported to the United States.

In 1649.... Oliver Cromwell at Drogheda slaughtered about 3,500 Irish Catholics for their part in being Irish and by definition “enemies of the Crown.”

This is my favorite citation for this date.

Whatever we may say about the muslims, they have, culturally, a long memory.

But in 2001 they overreached.
