Dems Say Health Care Bill to Pass This Year

WASHINGTON — Democratic congressional leaders predicted passage of health care legislation within a few months despite undimmed Republican opposition, claiming momentum Thursday from President Barack Obama's speech and renewed commitment from lawmakers fresh from a month of meetings with constituents. Increasingly, events in the Senate Finance Committee appeared pivotal, precursor to likely votes in both the House and the Senate by early October. "I'm confident the president will sign a bill this year," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California. While effusively praising Obama's speech from the night before, Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada signaled separately the president may not prevail in his call for legislation that allows the federal government to sell insurance in competition with private industry. Reid said that while he favors a strong "public option," he could be satisfied with establishment of nonprofit cooperatives, along the lines expected to be included in the bill taking shape in the Finance Committee. Pelosi, who has long favored a measure that allows the government to sell insurance, passed up a chance to say it was a nonnegotiable demand. As long as legislation makes quality health care more accessible and affordable, "we will go forward with that bill," she said.

No bill would obviously be ideal, but I wonder whether the co-op plan provides for indefinite funding of the co-ops or whether Congress will just provide initial seed money. If we can't stop the bill outright, the next best thing would be to force Dems to get Congress to authorize additional funding down the road. I'm hopeful that Republicans can gain a lot of Congressional seats in coming years, thus ensuring that no more money is appropriated for co-ops down the road.

Irrational Optimism. There's no example in history that lends credence to that hope.

But Nancy said they would pass healthcare before the summer recess. Oh, wait, that didn’t happen, did it?

The question is, what legislative/executive office chicanery will take place to force this on an unwilling citizenry? And after this, what next? I predict predetermined massively rigged elections. These are not people acting like they intend to leave office.

Huh. Harry and Nancy said they had the votes six weeks ago, then they said it last week, then they said it a couple days ago. Why isn’t it passed already? I mean, I’m sure they’re telling the truth. They wouldn’t lie; that’d be terrible for their credibility! Gotta be another reason.

The only way they will pass ObamaCare is via nuclear option.

As I understand it, the Democrats actually have only a month to get a SINGLE bill passed by the House. This is because the Senate HAS TO DECIDE by 10/15 whether to invoke the ‘Nuclear Option’ which by all reports would be REQUIRED with any bill with the ‘Public Option’. Granted that the Democrats have a history of destroying legalities when it is to their benefit (New Jersey Torricelli -> Lautenberg 2002 and Massachusetts Governor’s Senate Appointment), but this may be a step too far if they try to work this into December!
