The US warned yesterday that Iran might already have enough enriched uranium to build a bomb as Tehran defied sanctions threats and stuck to its nuclear programme.
Western diplomats said there was little new in Iranian proposals that were handed over yesterday by the Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, to representatives of the five UN Security Council members and Germany. They said that the document appeared to be a rehash of a version that failed to address global concerns over an alleged military component to Irans nuclear programme.
The country has dominated a week-long meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under way in Vienna as the deadline for President Obamas offer of talks draws near. According to the latest American assessment, outlined by Glyn Davies, the American Ambassador to the IAEA, the Iranian nuclear enrichment programme is bringing it closer to a dangerous and destabilising possible breakout capacity. Iran is now either very near, or in possession already, of sufficient low-enriched uranium to produce one nuclear weapon, if the decision were made to further enrich it to weapons-grade, Mr Davies told governors of the IAEA.
Mr Davies flagged up Western intelligence reports about Tehrans alleged weapons experiments, which he said was evidence of military ambitions for its nuclear programme.
Taken in connection with Irans refusal to engage with the IAEA regarding its past nuclear warheadrelated work, we have serious concerns that Iran is deliberately attempting, at a minimum, to preserve a nuclear weapons option, he said.
That view was a challenge to Mohamed ElBaradei, the Director-General of the IAEA, who has sought to play down the Iranian threat.
Tehran insists that its programme is for civilian energy purposes only but has refused to answer the IAEAs questions about weapons attempts, leaving the agency in what Dr ElBaradei describes as

I heard someone talking about this the other day. They said if Israel strikes Iran, oil could go up to $400.00 a barrel. Think of what that would do to the world economy?
NOt to worry. In 3 - 5 days we will hear that they are 10 years aware from getting a bomb!
Don’t worry, he’ll send them a stern letter.
The gutless West has procrastinated until it is too late. No one should be surprised when millions die.
Isn’t it amazing that obama is exactly carter redux?
