The things I thought that were good about the speech. (dangerous vanity around here)

Posted on 09/10/2009 7:31:57 AM PDT by Scythian

I watched the entire speech. At least it felt like he was talking and not just "reading" and had a grasp on the material. I think he's learning, here are the things I agree with Obama on.

1) Insurance haggeling and denying benefits and procedures over trivial "gotcha's" on enrollment forms is pure evil.

2) Being denied benefits because of prexisting conditions, I agree with Obama, that practice should end.

3) There are many area's with very little health insurance competition which isn't great.

4) Insurance companies dropping the sick is wrong.

5) Employees need to be able keep the same plans when switching jobs.

6) American's are not becoming healthier, the reverse is actually true.

Now, I also agree that all Americans ought to have affordable health care insurance, it's terrible that there are really people out there without it, how terrible that must be.

Also, there is report out just recently that the #1 reason for bankruptcy and loss of ones home (in 2007 before the crash) was Medical Bills. People become sick, and lose everything they have.

I think we as American's can do better. I don't know what the solution truly is. But part of it is the way we practice medicine, there should be a focus on natural remedies first, doctors should be trained to recognize things like system candida issues which lie behind tons of doctors visits. Patients should be informed about maintaining a healthy PH, healthy gut flora, vitamins, amino acids, and excercise, and even refocus on the health of sun exposure. MS is linked heavily to low vitamin D. Lupis, ALS, MS, Diabetes, Chron's and so on all continue to skyrocket effecting more each day. The answer is not more research and new drugs, the answer is a change in life style. The American way of life is great, but in large part we are poisoning ourselves with almost everything we contact.

So, to be honest, and this will get me raked over the coals I am sure, but a lot of the things Obama want's to fix really need fixing. Including of course the lawsuit issue.

Now, the thing that gets me is Obama says he's going to pay for this by finding waste in Medicaid and Medicare (I think that's what he said). So, after the speech my mind gets to thinking, there that much waste in there? Enough to pay for all this? If so why would this government program not have that same waste?

I earnestly listened to Obama, I feel it a moral issue from my perspective that we should do something. A lot of the issues are really related to the fact that we are extremely unhealthy in the way we live and eat and apply products with all kinds of chemicals to our bodies. Not to mention the dangers of the GMO foods we now eat every single day. There are many things wrong with our health care system.

I would like to see an alternative health care system, one based on alternative holistic medicine where doctors could treat and not be in danger of being jailed. Let the pharmies and alternative guys go head to head, competition is good right?

If you ban insurance companies from disqualifying pre-existing conditions altogether, then what incentive do people have to buy insurance when they are not sick?

Most of the things you say you agree with Obama on are BS.

Do more research.

Clue ~ when you change jobs and cross a state line you will almost certainly lose your insurance ~ under the current law, or a future law.

That's because there's no provision in federal law for medical insurance companies to compete across state lines.

it just goes downhill from there.

Hear, hear. It’s refreshing to see someone paying attention to something other than the letter next to the name.

all I can say is at least you currently have the chance to shop for another insurance carrier if they start playing these games with you. What are you gonna do when the single payer Government plan does all this to you (and worse)?

Careful. Obama makes a powerful kool-aid. Watching him is like agreeing to listen to a Jehovah's Witness out of deference and because you're sure you can't be fooled: it's no-win.

I thought the contents of the school speech were "unobjectionable" until I realized (thank you, Rush) that it was a complete sham and was utterly contrary, those words, to the man's entire political life.

you are agreeing with premises that everyone agrees. This is a false presentation by Obama. The things you are list at the top of your list happen rarely, if ever happen, but he is trying to make it sound like ‘evil’ insurance companies are running around doing this... and only the wonderful government can solve these woes. It is a strawman argument. Something Obama loves to use in his speeches. He then pretends like no one else has a different solution, so we must put his in place.

Well, with Obamacare, I assume the incentive is not paying thousands in fines for not having insurance.

Being denied benefits because of prexisting conditions, I agree with Obama, that practice should end.

If you forced insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions, then no healthy person in their right mind would ever buy insurance - they'd wait until they were sick. Imagine what the insurance premiums would have to be under those conditions.

If so why would this government program not have that same waste?

The devil is in the details. There is no perfect system. If all us conservatives got our way, it would not be a perfect system.

It scares the heck out of me to have a centralized govt run health care.

The best I can come up with is Fred Thompson: “ We need to have 50 different ideas in 50 states and let them compete for the best idea.”

Sure, we all agree that there needs to be some changes - starting with Tort reform, allowing companies to cross state lines which would make more competitive pricing. How about this one: Ask insurance companies to offer a "group plan" for self employed folks? That would be a huge group plan with more affordable rates - that would also cover a large number of folks who want insurance but need the group plan rates.

There are many things that could be done that are being ignored
