All eyes were on Barack Obama entering Wednesday night's address to Congress, but a little-known South Carolina Republican may have done more than the presidents combative speech to unify besieged Democrats around health care reform.
The night's defining moment which Democrats hope to transform into a turning point came when Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) shouted "You lie!" as Obama claimed his plan wouldn't offer free care to illegal immigrants.
Wilson's boorishness for which he quickly apologized enraged audience members on both sides of the aisle.
It also overshadowed a speech that included some of Obama's harshest attacks on his GOP critics to date, including a denunciation of "death panel" alarmists as liars a veiled swipe at Sarah Palin and a warning to Republicans who want to "kill" reform.
"What we have also seen in these last months is the same partisan spectacle that only hardens the disdain many Americans have toward their own government," Obama said. "Too many have used this as an opportunity to score short-term political points, even if it robs the country of our opportunity to solve a long-term challenge. And out of this blizzard of charges and counter-charges, confusion has reigned.
"Well, the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed," he added, to Democratic cheers.

Stop the insults and get some rest.
I hope the man gets voted out of office next election for being a dumbass
I sure am glad you are not in charge of this “war” as you call it. Talk about friendly fire! :(
This is unquestionably ironic.
Listen fool.
Your messiah give a hard left partisan attack speech in
Congress which he like a Union goon rally the troops and you want us to be quiet and civil. Screw You lefty .
This is hardly a time for civility.
The Communist party has taken control of your country.
Will we play by the Queensbury rules?
I am a very civil person.
However’
Wilson said what needed to be said and what his constituents wanted to say.
There is a time for civility and a time for the truth to be shouted out.
Tonight was just such a time. Wilson did not embarrass himself. It was a rallying cry.
Wilson just earned himself a bit of fame amongst Conservatives.
He might be a dumbass, but at least he's our dumbass.
Would any Liberal who defeated him be less of a dumbass?
And this is why I am so glad he said it.
This will be known as the "You Lie" Speech.
All its major points are lies; all its "corrections" of lies are lies.
In the coming weeks the focus will be on this Lie Speech.
The congressman was right to apologize for not being more civil in this forum, but God bless him for shouting out the summary of Obama Healthcare: "Lie".
exactly call it the You Liar speech !
Do you think that, as the bills are debated and amended in the coming weeks, Obama’s claim that “the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally” will be examined for truthfulness more or less as a result of Wilson?
When the man in the office does not respect it, or us why should we honor the office held by a communist, liar and facist? There is nothing to respect while he is in that office...
He should have apologized and he did.
But I’m really glad he did it.
Because the focus, the big event, if it is Wilson’s “Lie” charge has two parts to it:
1) Should he have said it?
2) Is he accurate?
He and I and you can answer “No” to the first. But the focus on the second remains.
And that’s a very good thing to have up front after this event.
Yes, we must always act civil like John McCain...We will win the war for this country that way....lets just all get along...I admired the man that called him out until he apologized..
It delighted me, until he said “sorry”
Unfortunately, the State Run Media and the Democrats will make poor little Poseur Obama a victim of those Mean Spirited Republicans.
We are being ruled by Children.
LOL great response...
Well, if my husband had said it, publicly I would be saying “how could you say that,” but privately I would be saying “I understand exactly why you did....”
IMHO He really was venting the frustration of hundreds of thousands of people who have been called Nazis and mobsters, whose opinions been dissed or ignored; people who have read and understand what is in HR3200 and are told they are bickering and game-playing.
So maybe it was time to tell emperor about his clothing.
That would be deeply offensive to a guy named Hussein.
The time to have ba!!s in not after your elected..
