MORAGA A holiday weekend visiting a family residence turned ugly Monday morning for a San Francisco couple who found themselves victims of what they believe was a hate crime.
Tni and David Newhoff, who spent the weekend at David's parents' home on Wandel Drive, awoke to find in the driveway a cross, covered in a white cloth and with "KKK" written on the crossbar, Tni Newhoff said.
Moraga police Chief Robert Priebe said his department is working with the FBI to investigate the case. Tni Newhoff said she filed a report with the FBI's hate crimes division.
"It obviously upset us," she said. "It took awhile to process because I could live to be 100 years old and I would never expect something like that."
Tni is black and David is white. Tni Newhoff said she and her husband visit his parents in Moraga often and have never had any reason to believe something like this would ever happen.
"The obvious answer is it happened because I am black and someone was unhappy about my being there," she said.
Priebe referred questions about the case to an FBI spokesman, FBI Special Agent Joseph Schadler, who said the bureau is reviewing the case. The FBI has yet to determine if a crime has taken place, Schadler said, or whether the incident warrants federal involvement.
"There's a lot of work to be done before it ends up being classified one way or another," he said.
James Newhoff, David's father, said he and his wife

Having a pity party? Create a self inflicted hate crime?
Hmmm...seen way too many of these be attention seeking crap from the “victim”.
the subtle answer is: “this is yet another scam, by the FAR Left.
Unfortunately you are both correct.
There is a very slim chance it was done by the KKK.
A slightly larger chance it was kids being stupid.
A far, far more likely chance that the homeowners did it themselves.
meanwhile across America how many whites were today killed or raped or robbed by blacks?
and how many blacks were raped, robbed or killed by whites?
that is far more revealing than this crude symbol no matter the origin
I would say there is an absolutely zero chance that it was done by anyone affiliated with the KKK. But I wouldn’t put it past some idiotic teenagers in the neighborhood.
I cry fake!
Like the race card, these “hate crime” stunts are starting to wear thin.
I wonder how much time Tni and David spent making that cross - not too long from the looks of it.
Maybe it's just me.
I read this sentence and I think to myself, everyone keeps yelling about what a racist nation this is. If we are as racist as is claimed, why wouldn't you expect something like this?
Now, give the very real possibility that she did this herself, we must assume a) she does think this is a racist nation b) feels the need to show us evidence this is so and c) manufactured the statement above so as to seem as though she doesn't have a racial thought in her head.
It's mindboggling.
I grew up in Pleasant Hill which is about 12 miles away from Moraga. I don’t recall any KKK in our area! I mean come on when did the prestine area of Moraga become Alabama in the 60s.. This is pure Liberal BS!
Is this just freaking goofy or what? So typical CA. Somebody was offended. Raise funds for some organization that can do nothing for the aggrieved!
And what kind of name is 'Tni'? Maybe her mom was a Monty Python fanatic.
I can’t help thinking that myself with all the DemoPervert lying lefties coming out with one bogus accusation of racism after another all over the place, it makes me damned suspicious that this is just another phoney hate crime made up to accuse Republicans of..even thoughthe KKK comes from the Left...always has.
Every charge of rude, rough, or fully violent behavior in town halls has rebounded to Obama’s thugs, BUT if no unexplained Newhoff fingerprints or DNA are found on or in the cross, law enforcement should investigate on the premise that the (hate?) crime complaint may be valid.
Wolf! Wolf! Just kidding...
Nobody believes these stories anymore, with very good reason.
Sounds like a set up.
