PHILADELPHIA — On the very first day of the school year, 12-year-old Mileena Rodriguez was reminded by President Barack Obama himself that hard work can take you places.Mileena listened to Obama's plea to study hard and stay in school Tuesday, watching along with several of her classmates at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School and students across the country. For all the hubbub among adults over the back-to-school speech, many youngsters took the president's message to heart.
"He said that we're the future, and he's right," said Mileena, who wants to be a forensic scientist. "That's a president telling you, `I care about you getting your education.' Just imagine what kids like us can do if we actually listen."
Schoolchildren from coast to coast watched on classroom TVs and computer screens. Others did not hear the message at all, either because their parents pulled from them from class or their schools refused to carry the speech over complaints from conservative groups and others that it smacked of political indoctrination.
In his speech, which aired on C-SPAN and the White House Web site, Obama used examples from his own life to urge students to study hard. He told them to stop chasing dreams of being athletes or reality TV stars.

How about teaching kiddies what you’re really good at, O? Like scoring some blow and booze when you have a little bit of extra cash? Or how to get into prestigious private schools and rarified universities with no grades, no achievement, no dough and no connections?
AP = A-hole Press
That they have to write articles (and I’ve seen several) exclaiming, “See! Obama really did inspire the kids!! See!” clearly speaks to how ineffectual it actually was.
lol I was asked today if I watched the speech. I said what speech? rofl
sure they do. forensic scientist = CSI !!!
Both of them?
You: The speech was innocuous, and reinforced what teachers tell their students anyway. Protesting or obstructing this speech plays right into 0's hands. It's a stupid and ultra-partisan overreaction.
I obviously disagree. Of course the speech was innocuous...thanks to the outcry from conservatives and parents across the country, who deserve immeasureable credit for refusing to give Zero carte blanche with America's children. He needs to be opposed at virtually every turn. The speech was undoubtedly scrubbed of plenty of propaganda before delivery. Waiting until after the speech to speak up would have been too late; the damage would have been done. I don't care if Zero can claim that the complaints were an ultra-partisan reaction. The point is that he was silenced in many schools yesterday. And anyway, he doesn't have the time to gloat about an "ultra-partisan reaction," he has too many self-inflicted problems to cope with right now.
From your comments, I can only assume that you are not a school principal in a conservative military communtiy that voted against Obama by a large margin, let alone a superintendent in such a community. Please get back with me when you are qualified to comment on their actions.
