Obama to Endorse Public Plan in Speech

JONATHAN WEISMAN and JANET ADAMY

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama, in a high-stakes speech Wednesday to Congress and the nation, will press for a government-run insurance option in a proposed overhaul of the U.S. health care system that has divided lawmakers and voters for months.

White House officials say the president will detail what he wants in the health-care overhaul, as well as say he is open to better ideas on a government plan if lawmakers have them.

Democratic plans call for requiring most Americans to have health insurance. Failure to comply could cost families as much as $3,800 a year, according to a Senate proposal.

The president is likely to make clear that a government-run insurance plan, known as the "public option," will not provide a level of subsidies that give it an unfair advantage over private insurers, according to aides familiar with the speech preparations.

Insurers oppose the public option, saying it will lead to excessive government control of health care and could eventually drive them out of business. Republicans say they won't support an overhaul with a public option and liberal Democrats say they won't support one without it. "Are the stakes important? Of course," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. "It's a big audience, and the president will get a chance to lay out clearly for the American people what's involved for them."

Big questions are likely to remain. Mr. Gibbs said the speech wouldn't be "accompanied by truckloads of paper and our own piece of legislation."

Negotiations over the health legislation resumed Tuesday as lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill after a month-long break.

A bipartisan group of senators huddled in the afternoon to decide whether to move forward on an overhaul plan...

Grassley sounds a bit soft to the idea of “health care reform”. But he has also definitively stated that he will vote “No” on any bill which includes a public option.

Let's talk about substantial changes in the health care system, such as, oh, let's take medicines for example.

If Congress made law that no public dollars would go to any medicine that had not been vetted by an insurance founded and funded verification laboratory much like Underwriter's Lab, nor would any public dollars go to any medicine which was not compared by this impartial lab to existing treatments including over the counter and generics, that no money would go to any generics that didn't pass the same examination for effectiveness and safety, gosh, a whole lot of the medicine game would be up.

Heck, you could even tie in tort reform into this, making a maximum payout limit for insurers who follow this path, as well as their drug company clients.

But no, no, all we get as ‘reform’ is just some asinine expansion of the existing system which they claim is broken in the first place. No new doctors, no new hospitals, no new clinics, just more people put into the same health system so that everyone can now have even worse care. I'd say that this is liberal ideology at it's worst, but many conservatives wave the Mitt flag around here, and it's pretty much the same idea. Bad.

If this crap passes, we are one step closer to officially becoming Venezuela. Obama’s master plan of turning America into a Communist country will become a reality

You can just sense that the pending arrival of all of us in D.C. on 9/12 isn’t even on their political radar screens yet. They have no idea the depth and breadth of the frustration they have ignited.

Limbaugh had it right when he said the purpose of the speech is to save Obama’s political bacon.

In other words, 0bozo will not be saying a whole more than he’s already been babbling about for the last two months, including his last all networks speech (except for Fox) which was a dud and turned into an embarrassment for 0bozo after he slammed the Cambridge cop in a cheap racist shot. What a POS 0bozo is!!! He’s going to rehash his same line of BS that he’s already been spewing for the last two months.

Or maybe it will be trigger that unleashes the storm of outrage to take our country back from the socialist communists by force.

I triple-f**king dogg dare Obama to call for a Public Plan tomorrow? You want to talk about a Waterloo? It will sound like brooms sweeping the RATS out in '10 and '12 and beyond?

Any BlueDog, RINO or RAT that hears "Public Option" in tomorrows speech and doesn't hear the sound of their political career getting flushed down the toilet at the same time is an id10t?

obuma is stupid beyond measure. He should endorse Stalin or Hitler to end the debate about whether he’s a Nazi or a communist.

They are planning on cramming it through and betting enough voters will get used to the idea and forget by the next election round in 2010.

In the past they have been correct. Americans have notoriously short memories. The "Independents" are especially fickle and shallow and may well fall for it.

Why would the Republicans even show up for this farce? If they had any (you know what), they’d call in sick. These people are simply shameless – the whole lot of them.
