DSEi Some days, the world of military whizz-tech can get to be a bit humdrum. Awesome as missiles, robots etc. are, they can sometimes pall. But today is no such day: today we on the Reg military whizz-tech desk have been interviewing the inventor of an actual, working powered exoskeleton - in his suit, powered up, with hundreds of pounds of armour and other military bric-a-brac strapped onto him.

It looks like the extra weight of all the power, motors and struts take up all the ability of this invention - ie no extra weapons or armor for the soldier.

It certainly gives him the "leaning forward, in your face" stance. I was more impressed by the computerized burro that someone invented. THAT would be cool to have lugging an 'A' and 'C' bag through the airport for yet another deployment. Something practical.

Isn’t that gun going to be loud right next to his ear, and hot too?

Special Operations folks in Tampa have informed me weight is transferred to the ground. Body armor will be mounted to the actual exoskeleton. They are also experimenting with a uniform made of a fabric which will transfer background image to fabric so one can become more camouflaged, whether in urban, woodland or desert environment.

The MCPS (Multi-Climate Protection System) flight jacket I received from a Marine friend is beautiful and useful, combining Nomex (fire resistance) and Gore-tex (breathable waterproofing) in a flight jacket. Unfortunately, my friend sent a Medium-Long so my gorilla-armed nephew ended up with the jacket. After finding out how expensive the thing was, I should have kept it. Like the aforementioned exoskeleton and fabric, stuff that won’t be very accessible at the local surplus store.

Not at all. That's Iron man don't forget. That helmet blocks heat, loud noise, nuclear blasts, and pipes in his favorite music on his itune list.

You don't know much about the MkIII and MkIV Exosuits from Stark Industries, do you?

Heinlein rides again.

Another step toward the powered armor he envisioned in Starship Troopers.
