Cornyn: August 'disaster' helped GOP By Reid Wilson - 09/08/09 09:37 AM ET

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) will inform colleagues on Tuesday that the August recess gave Republicans a new advantage heading into the 2010 elections.

In a memo to Republican senators, Cornyn calls the summer break “nothing short of a disaster for our Democrat colleagues” that put momentum behind the GOP. After beginning the cycle with more retirements and vulnerable incumbents than Democrats had, Cornyn notes: “What a difference a couple of months makes.”

“President Obama is now attempting to press the reset button for the third time on the healthcare debate with his joint address to Congress this week,” Cornyn writes in the memo. “Republicans agree with the president that both parties need to work together to rein in out-of-control healthcare costs. We agree the status quo is unsustainable.

“But we do not agree that the way to solve that problem is to raise costs, destroy jobs and put government bureaucrats in charge of decisions that should be made by patients and doctors,” he added. “Judging by the reaction from citizens across the country this summer, the American people agree with us.”

Cornyn will point to several specific races where Democrats have slipped while Republicans have scored recruiting successes. In the last month, Rep. Mark Kirk (R) announced he would run for an open seat in Illinois; Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) made his bid official and leads both his potential Democratic challengers; and at least one prominent candidate has stepped forward against Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), who was previously seen as unbeatable.

Like Rahm The Fish said....”We can’t let a good disaster pass w/o getting what we want.” Or, something like that.

Here we go - the Stupid Party is piggybacking the success of the grassroots. Hey Cornyn - we are mad at Republicans too!

Hello John? Is anyone "in there"?

The Republicans didn't do squat, as normal.

It was grass roots Americans!!!!

When is the GOP leadership going to get it?

Ah, who cares anyway?

They are taking notes and keeping their powder dry for 2010, it's still a bit early for them to start actively campaigning.

Really. The grassroots helped the GOP, which did nothing to help itself. I just got an invite from my state party to participate in a big “round table” featuring Grover Norquist. They are clueless. Like I want to sit in the same room with a lobbyist for Islam.

Fifteen months is a lifetime in politics. Let’s hope there’s a similar disaster next August heading into the elections.

Too late for a “reset” Obama! America is awake now and knows all about what your healthcare and Cap and Trade plans are. Since you are still pushing both plans that will hurt most people in this country all of your hope is gone and people do want change now, change away from the left’s ideas and more that they know will work in this right of center country.

Take responsibility for your own future, and stop expecting political "leaders" to do it for you. They're not leaders. They're career politicians. It is rare for true leaders to hold elective office. Such men/women don't come along very often. If they're going to appear, it's at time like the present that they will arise from the grassroots.

Don't complain about the failure of politicians to lead. Do it yourself. It's your life, your future. Take personal responsibility! Isn't that a core conservative principle?

I agree with others here, 2010 we also have to rid the GOP of RINO’s by tossing their asses out with the rest of the libs. They are just as bad as the libs because they are libs themselves!

I hope that Cornyn can take this and get a conservative agenda through. For the most part the GOP is, but there are some exceptions. For one you have some (not tons) RINO’s and idiotic GOP moderates trying to piggyback on populist American views. There are also some stupid jackball Republicans who see this and think that the American public wants some sort of compromise when in fact they want a complete repudiation of socialised medicene.

It was the people that threw the wrench into Obammy-care, not anything the RNC or R’s in Congress did. The party leaders better not believe they had anything to do with this and damn well sure better not negotiate away gains the people made or the 2010 gains will NOT happen!

Cornyn - don’t get too boastful about this. We need true conservatives, not RINO’s in 2010.

This from a man who thinks Arlen Specter is so good he backs him faithfully until the Specter puts a knife between Cornyn’s shoulderblades.

Why should we believe anything that the GOP leadership says?

They used to like traitor Chaffee and now are honestly in love with the likes of Snowe, Collins and McCain.
