Dems pin health reform hopes on Obama's speech

Democrats return to Washington this week for a last-ditch effort to salvage health care reform, looking to President Obama's joint-session speech Wednesday to avert a political and legislative train wreck.

It is an astonishing reversal of fortunes for a party that started the year with triumphant control of Congress and the presidency, confident in its ambitions to retool the nation's economy, not only with health care but also climate change and a New Deal-style economic stimulus.

Democrats instead return bloodied by a terrible August of plummeting public support, raucous town-hall meetings, a re-energized GOP and an impasse in their own ranks over whether to provide a "public option" as an alternative to private health insurance.

Health care may swallow efforts to address climate change, while the weak economy and shocking deficits fuel public fears about the government's capacity to launch costly new social programs.

The White House is deep in negotiations with one of the few Republican senators still at the table, Maine's Olympia Snowe, who has proposed a "trigger" mechanism that would provide a public option only if cost savings promised by the insurance and drug industries fail to materialize.

Snowe argues that more savings must be achieved before adding $1 trillion in new spending, and the taxes to pay for it, to a system already plagued by waste and soaring costs. Her idea has intrigued interest groups and analysts worried that reforms in Massachusetts that are similar to the Democratic legislation have achieved near universal coverage but also threaten the state's finances.

It’s amazing how the Dimocrats view Americans as nothing monkeys to be manipulated. This week was nothing but a marketing make over for Zer0.

It is become apparent that Zer0 is in this for himself. He is a narcissist; our benevolent dictator.

He is truly in his own world.

Obumbler has been horrible at speech making lately! The Dr.’s getting $50,000 to amputate a limb. The savings on health care reform, savings on preventative medicine. The garbage about the USPS vs UPS etc. This doesn’t look good. It is clear Obama really doesn’t understand health care and there really isn’t a bill or position to present since no bill or position has been formulated yet!

The Donkeys just don't get it.
We are long past the stage for meaningless, lie-filled, flowery speeches, that are full of grandoise empty promises.
It says a lot about the arrogance and stupidity of the empty suit in the White House, that he still thinks a mere speech is going to change the sure knowledge of a well informed public, that have actually read the terrible bill, that this healthcare bill is about the worst thing that could happen to healthcare in this country.

We need to flood the congressional switchboards, fax machines and e-mail accounts the next day, letting them know that nothing has changed and we don't want any so-called "reform" of health care, especially from Obama and Pelosi!! Be subtle, logical, emotional or loud, whichever suits your personality, but let your representative and two senators know that their jobs are on the line!

Yes! Who could ever trust any move coming out of this administration and it’s “shadow” government.

Personally I think he's a horrible speaker.

I can't stand to even listen to him and will wait for the written comments.

Amen to that..big difference between an orator and a reader...and zero "ain't no orator.

My statement reminds me of a guy I worked with on a boat awhile back. He was a damn good cook, and I praised his work.. He came back to me with this,"Cap, there is a big difference between a cook and a canopener, and I ain't no canopener."

The best ‘reform’ is to get the Fed/Guv as far away from it as possibile.

A “horrible speaker” that's for sure!

His voice inflections and smug looks have made me tune him out. Only the TOTUS keeps him on target otherwise he would be speechless.

‘WOW the Dems don’t even realize the train has already wrecked..’

A few do...the ones who bothered to talk w/ constituents rather than hide. The rest lapsed into ‘Ostrich’ mode and are still in the dark. Hopefully, the light will be dawning nice and bright shortly.

I have a hard time believing one speech is going to change people’s minds.

Today's speech is only Chapter One.
