Laura Bush defends Obama school speech
CNN ^ | 09/07/2009

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."

The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school… (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized — not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

Why? I don't respect him. My children already don't respect him after what they heard during the campaign. Only an asshat RINO like Bush would say this nonsense. Reminds me of McCain reassuring a townhall woman that "there is nothing to fear from Obama in the White House". Oh really? I beg to differ. RINO swine.

I keep seeing comments that there are objectionable lesson plans to go along with his talk. What do they contain?

Why do we have to be lectured to by an uppity librarian? Just STFU. Her husband is staying out of all these things, and being very dignified. Why can’t she?

And since the left felt wronged about the 2000 election that was the reason they used to justify their childish antics.

>>No because the woman has some class.

FR is turning into DU.<<

Thank God someone here understands what I mean when I say “she has to.”

STFU, Laura. It was cluelessness such as this that undermined your husband’s Presidency.

They were urging students to make posters of "notable Obama quotes" to put up on the walls, to read Obama books, to discuss with the kids "what they can do to help President Obama", and things of that nature.

Yes they have disappeared around here. It doesn’t matter how repulsive and insane we found the conduct of the left for the 8 years of Bush’s terms. The left won so I guess that excuses all sorts of low rent and self-justifying behavior on right.

Laura Bush is a classy lady. People expect her to deviate from that and to her credit she doesn’t.

One party rule.

And, by the way, you earn respect.

I suggest to everyone here to actually read the CNN article.

Oh Mamzelle, those that are sliming the former First Lady don't give a rip what she actually said. They are just thrilled to have a prime opportunity to continue their degradation of the Bush family.

“She has to”? What do you mean, ‘she has to’ speak out on this? Where the hell has she been when she could have ‘spoken out’ on Cap and Trade, Socialized Medicine, that sellout stimulus package, the commies in this Administration? Where the hell were you then, Laura?

and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same,"

i.e. Bill Cosby?

It wasn't just a speech 5 years ago; he is still beating the drum for (gasp!) ghetto parents to parent, and students to study.

The text of the speech sounded fine to me, but what you just said are contained in the lesson plans is creepy. It is too much aggrandizement of one man. Reminds me of dictatorships where the dictator’s photo is posted all over the country. Besides, I wonder if there isn’t there some law against promoting your books while in public office.

“There are certain pro-forma things that must be said by people who were in positions of prominence”

There’s always the option to say nothing.

Yet more drivel out of the "compassionate conservative (non-prolife)" former first lady.

Stay home in Dallas and off the airwaves, please!

OK Folks,
If that's the speech, it's a d@mn good one. I wonder who wrote it?

Now if I can just get past that sneaking suspicion that there is a propaganda motive for this...

Thank you both. I was beginning to feel as if I needed a shower after reading this thread...similar to the way I feel after dipping into the sewer of DU.

Good post. The country is starting to figure out it dosen’t want to be in the train with the egomaniacal engineer who is running at a dangerous speed and is about to run off the tracks.

Personal stories about himself.

I read it and couldn't care less about his little woe was my childhood stories. His "it's all about MEEEEE!" ego got in the way as it always does. Thankfully, most kids will be asleep after about the 90 second mark.
