Laura Bush defends Obama school speech

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."

The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school… (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized — not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

Laura should have kept her mouth shut.

I wholeheartedly agree. There was no reason for the former First Lady, of all people, to speak up.

I’m directing this to posters who believe this was merely a boring speech that puts people to sleep.

That is the whole point: put the people to sleep while your administration (regime) pushes forward top speed to impose marxism on America.

Wake up!! NOTHING this regime does is harmless or to be taken at face value or on the surface. As Rush has said many times, ignore the words. The medium is the message.

DANGER approaches.

Strange to me I could find only one thread on this topic and apparently it was not side-barred.

FReepers are slipping. I read the entire thread and not one person mentions that Laura was a Democrat when she met George W. Bush and nowhere have we ever heard or read that she ever changed her affiliation.

I expect more of this support for the Osama regime from her and her daughters.

I think she said he had the right to give a speech to the students as Ronald Reagan did...George Senior did and George Junior did. She is just saying what is the big deal. Republicans can, but democrats can't? She thought the whole criticism was silly. I did not get to watch the entire interview just a snippet as I was walking out the door.

Agree. No question about it, Bush and the Republican congress were certainly big spenders themselves and they bear responsibility for helping to build this mountain of debt.

". . . nowhere have we ever heard or read that she ever changed her affiliation."

Nonsense. She's a Republican, even has it listed on her Facebook page.
