Laura Bush defends Obama school speech

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."

The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school… (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized — not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

> FR is turning into DU.

It’s not just FR. With so much (justifiable) anger running around, it’s clear that there’s friendly fire erupting onto undeserving targets.

One guy on an email list I’m on viciously jumped down my throat because while I definitely think 0bamacare is socialism, I also think the insurance companies might need some reform in the shape of firm rules to prevent abuses like dumping a longpaying customer because they got cancer, which happened to my aunt.

People of good faith will disagree, and I have no problem with someone challenging me on what I say (I welcome it!) but the kind of foul language I got with airing a slightly different opinion is something I thought only classless libs did. Sadly, not the case.

Respect him Laura? You mean the way he respects your husband, the former President? In case you haven’t noticed, he’s still bashing President Bush. He’ll get zero respect from me. In fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever put the word “President” in front of his name.

Hey Laura, praising the Messiah is not going to gain you any favors. At every turn he blames your husband for every ill befalling our country. You and your husbands softness cost conservatives the house and the senate, and brought us Pelosi, Reed, and our muslim Kenya born president Barry Soetoro. If you haven’t figured it out yet, your remaining supporters detest Dear Leader and his socialist agenda. You basically are spitting on your remaining supporters.

Must be a Texas thing to have contributed LBJ and Bush too, I guess.

Laura Bush has the right to say nothing. She is very much a public figure, so when she says something, she is looking to influence. So when she ignores all the other stuff going on in this country, and then the one time I hear from her is in defense of a propaganda attempt by a commie ‘president’, then I won’t hold back on hammering her. There is a lot at stake here, with ramifications that kind of exceed the significance of say, getting the right style of china for the White House.

Pretty much. At least ther isn’t anything in there about rise of sea levels stopping, and great lights directing children to work harder for their government.

Anyone who thinks this is the original speech he intended to make isn't thinking straight. The administration admitted they changed it, this is the speech given to pacify the right, to hide his real intentions. He thought he could sneak the original one in on us, along with the questions and "homework" he wanted the kids to do. The people were right in raising he** about the speech and I am glad so many schools responded by refusing to show it.

Laura should have kept her mouth shut. Doesn't she remember the disrespect Bozo has shown, and continues to show, her husband?

The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school… (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

Notice they did not quote her verbatim about the lesson plans. And the "..." indicates they left something else out. Typical MSM ploy.

She's right about a certain level of respect due to the President. But she also spoke out about the lesson plans. So maybe she was not so off base if all she said had been recorded.

Yes, nothing would have changed if us on the right didn’t raise a stink about it. Thank the Lord that we at least have enough say that we can expose this marxist.

What seems to be lost in all of this is: Laura, why the hell should our school children listen to someone telling them to study hard and to stay in school when that someone can’t or wont even prove that He himself went to school and made any grades at all?

Does Mrs. Bush not get it? Do YOU not get it? Or did her words placing the onus of the controversy squarely on the White House/DoE lesson plan somehow manage to escape you?
