WASHINGTON (CNN) Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."
The former first lady said she believed criticism of the speech had arisen because of the accompanying lesson plans. If parents are opposed to the address, said Bush, "That's their right. You know that certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school (But) I think it's also really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
Does she think it's fair to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist? "I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized not really. So, I guess not," she responded.

You’re welcome. Anyone who knows anything about President & Mrs. Bush knows that they have a long history of reacting with civil tongues, beginning with President Bush’s first serious political adversary, Governor Richards, who was many things, civil not among them, especially to the Bush family. I don’t know how they keep turning that cheek, but they manage. May God bless them in their retirement.
How or why is it that when there’s some dust up there’s always some puke moderate republican that is just driven to open their stupid mouth and defend the socialist. Doesn’t matter whether it’s this issue or HC and the moron McJerkoff opening his stupid mouth.
When will it be acceptable to take a ball bat to these bastards.
Then again, the repubs were nothing to write home about either.
No because the civility continues to decline. People expect a Former First Lady (look up the definition of a lady) to act like a crass partisan slug. When she doesn’t people rip her left and right. I expect cheap commentary from Michelle and Hillary. Laura Bush expressed her thoughts without whining and without acting like a bitch and using the behavior of others to rationalize it. And for that I hold her in high regard.
Perhaps said concepts are lost on people like yourself?
Is that what might be considered the “Good Christian thing to do”?
Being honest without being rude is an art form today, and it is becoming difficult to tell good, honest, civil Americans from well meaning people who are fed up. I’ve been upset many times this year, so I speak from personal experience. Telling Mrs. Bush to ‘STFU’ is well beyond mannerful where I grew up. Were you taught this as a meaningful way to express yourself when you were young? I doubt it.
I’m getting damn sick and tired of leftist asswipes in our party and lame airheads like yourself that carry water for those fools along with clearly being unable to read.
Because you want to imply a false threat (just like an asswipe liberal) you deliberately falsify words used to form the conclusion you want to fabricate.
Regardless of someone’s name tag that the weekminded wish to worship, STUPID IS ALWAYS STUPID in my book.
The medium is the massage.
You are hateful. Have a nice life.
I read it too. Seems alright to me. And this has been done before, by Reagan and Bush 41 at least, probably others.
I object to the curriculum dictated by the White House, but after reading the speech, there is nothing wrong with it.
Obama is communist Laura. He doesn’t need help from you.
You are blissfully ignorant and consequently usless. Name for me the “be nice to lefty commie gifts” that stupid republicans have extended to the left that have gotten us anywhere. THEY HATE US. They take any goodie we offer them stupidly and they go “burp, thank you very much, can I have some more”.
Have you ever heard of casting your pearls before swine? Apparently not. It is what is applied when you realize you are dealing with vermin. Democrats (the Obama kind) want you dead. They are unreachable scum commited to Neo-Marxist principals of destruction of the right and capitolism. They are liars to the core.
So when someone sticks their ignorant nose into a battle about which they know nothing, don’t be supprised that you get your nose lopped of.
Learn from it.
Really? She has a gun to her head?
Quite a bit of emotion and namecalling from such a rationale conservative. Might want to check the mirror.
Hmm . . . ‘rational’, but nonetheless . . .
I read the speech and he will lose the attention of these kids in about five seconds. The speech itself is harmless. The fawning about it by the teachers is another thing altogether. But most kids just don’t care. I guess that is the good point.
In the end though, Laura is correct. We should respect the office of the President. As I learned a long time ago, you salute the rank not the person.
And then we work hard to change the person in the rank.
You bet!
We have a B&B of sorts on the Mendocino coast of northern California and actually had an older couple stay we us about 6 years ago who knew them. Don't believe they were good friends, but knew them well enough to say the whole family was a class act. Very nice, unpretentious people.
The speech as written is pretty innocuous. Even a little dull. If anything, it’s probably going to make kids yawn and turn them off Zero.
> Why do we have to be lectured to by an uppity librarian? Just STFU.
There’s no call for that kind of language about a decent and good First Lady. As for being lectured to, she didn’t march into your home and demand you listen to her, so calm down.
