Venezuela's Chavez drops in on Venice film festival
VENICE, Italy (AFP) Hugo Chavez stole the show at the Venice film festival Monday as he paid a surprise visit for the screening of veteran US director Oliver Stone's documentary on the Venezuelan president.
The leftist leader was expected to walk down the red carpet at around 5:00 pm (1500 GMT) to attend the official screening of "South of the Border", a look at Chavez's role in the bottom-up change sweeping South America.
Reports began to circulate last week that Chavez would make an appearance, which appeared increasingly likely when a large delegation of Venezuelan officials and a few military men were spotted on the Lido, the festival's outlying island venue, on Sunday.
Chavez, stopping off from a world tour that has taken him to Asia, Africa and Europe, does not give details of his private visits for security reasons.
Through a series of interviews interlaced with footage from US media and official statements, Stone's documentary is out to show that Chavez is not "public enemy number one" as so often depicted on US media outlets such as Fox News.

I figure Zer0 should have the Castro Bros in the peanut gallery when he addresses Congress on H/C on Wed.
Ah yes, but only if they are Marxist dictators...if it was a right-wing dictator then he would be universally reviled by Hollywoodites and their ilk.
HUAC - an idea who’s time has come (again).
The Hollywood left are nothing but cheerleaders for dictators and murderers.
These idiots would be the first ones strung up in a dictatorship.
Having seen the Youtube trailer showing Chavez trying to ride a kid’s bicycle I’m wondering if Oliver Stone could be a CIA agent? No-one could look at the tubby dictator and his pathetic pedalling attempt without laughing out loud. Perhaps Stone’s mocking of these banana republic strongmen is inspired by Borat ? Whatever, it’s delicious.
Yep, Jane Fonda and
Danny Glover are proud...
Sean Penn and many many more. Exactly why I stopped going to the movies and renting them. I use that money now to donate to opponents of the current congressmembers, to defeat them in the next congressional elections. Then I email those I donated against, and let them know it!
If Oliver Stone, et al, love Chavez so much, why don’t they just move there?
I can’t understand the love affair with communists. If you love ‘em, join ‘em and get the heck out of here.
Anybody seen Oliver Stone packing to move to Venezuela? That utopia awaits!
Chavez' changes have been so transparently from the top down that a child could recognize it.
Oliver Stone is a Marxist crank. Lots of them in prominent positions in the U.S. these days. As far as I’m concerned, these people are both idiots and enemies.
“Anybody seen Oliver Stone packing to move to Venezuela?”
He prefers to use the money and influence he’s gained in the U.S. to dismantle the U.S. All in the name of “progress”.
Because people like Stone view themselves as the elite. they think they won’t be subject to the rules and laws they want for others.
They will have full control over you in the guise of “helping” you
My view is that would-be statists like Stone and Moore love the idea of leftist dictatorship because it stifles dissent that they dislike. When you bring up the censorship and power grabbing, they will tell you the equivalent of “the goal justifies the means.” Their concept of liberty is that they get to do what they want and the ‘little people’ will support them and criticism will be suppressed.
